Similar Singers At the Same Time!

Having worked for Emmis in the 1980's, I was always suprised by the similar sound that two artists/groups would have at the same time (and appeal to the the same market). What do I mean?

Tiffany & Debbie Gibson
Sweet Sensation & Expose
NSYNC & Backstreet
Johnny Hates Jazz & Breathe
Bad English & Sheriff

Any others..does it still happen today?

And yes..I'm bored

Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch.

I could be wrong, but it seems like I remember hearing that the same person wrote the songs for these two artists. Was this true?

Does anyone here know the Mad TV skit where they parody Alex Band of The Calling, Scott Stapp of Creed, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, and Ray Charles, because they all have similar voices? This thread reminded me of that episode.
