Sin of Omission?

WBEN ran the story about police tracking down an alleged hit-and-run driver who seriously injured two college students near Daemen College last Friday night, but they left out one very interesting fact. The accused driver is a Promotions Director at Entercom Broadcasting. Check it out:

The Buffalo News got "the rest of the story": http://www.buffalonews.com/home/story/607286.html?imw=Y

Let's hope that Ms. Glinski wasn't on the way home from a station event.

Hitting and running is not nice. Bad enough when it is car on car, but people are even worse. Even so, you have to stop and deal with it. I say that as a victim of a hit and run 11 years ago. I chased the guy down. Of course the prosecutor reduced the charge to inattentive driving, because it was the guy's attorney's 62nd birthday. The judge was not happy, the police were not happy, but I said I would not sit quietly by and allow it without a public apology in open court. I figured if I was going to get "a little note" the least I could do was reek a little havoc.

You have to stop and just be mad at yourself, but it won't be as bad as if you keep on going. It just isn't nice.

I guess you could call it a "sin of omission" if the information had been pertinent to the story....but it wasn't, so why would they mention it?

When one chooses to wreak havoc, the aroma can be quite strong and truly reek! ...On the lighter side... ;)

This subject reminds me of time during my brief period on the air...

Our morning newsman reported a story about a person who was arrested for DUI following an accident in one of the suburbs. The on-air staff thought nothing of it until the station manger walks in the studio during a commercial break and asks the newsman about the story.

We watched as the station manager read the story to himself and shook his head. With curiosity getting the better of us, we asked if he knew the person who was arrested.

Oh sure, he knew the guy. Turned out to be the mid-morning guy on the AM side. He arrived for work with a few cuts and bruises and his hairpiece a little out-of-place.

NONE of us knew his real name, only his on-air name. I think only the station manager and payroll secretary knew his real name. His on-air name had such a unique spelling that we all assumed it was legit.

He was given a week off (not sure if it was paid or not) and left the station shortly thereafter.

You can't make this stuff up! It would have made a great WKRP episode.

Looking back I don't know what's more amazing, the fact that nobody knew his real name, or that we actually had a live-body on the air on the AM side from 9am to noon. Imagine that happening today.

You'd better believe that WBEN would have found it "pertinent" if she was a Buffalo News staffer, or a staffer at another broadcast station. IF she was on the way home from a station function, it would be even more pertinent. I don't know if that's true or not.

There is a concept called "full disclosure".

Are you serious? Full disclosure?

And this full disclosure would serve only one purpose: So you could say "Ah-hah!" Beyond that, the relationship is meaningless.

They reported the story. What more do you want?

WBEN would hammer away if it was a Buffalo News staffer. Disappointed to hear they didn't identify her towards the end of the story with a simple sentence stating she is a "former employee of Entercom Buffalo, which owns WBEN."

It was in the news again recently. It's still relevant based on WBEN's decision/approach on how to cover the court proceedings.

If I remember correctly, didn't WIVB fail to mention a story (covered by the others) about a then-news director arrested on election night '95 after picking up a hooker, getting in a brief high speed chase with police, and then throwing said hooker out of his car at 3 in the morning near ECMC?

Ironically, the only time you'd need full disclosure is when the station ISN'T covering a story. The full disclosure would make it clear why. Of course, that would be ridiculous. But since the station, in WBEN's case, DID the story, why would there be any need to establish a link between the perp and the station? SErves no purpose other than just being gossipy.
