Since we're flipping formats here...

...I have an idea for KROI since going La Preciosa/Recuerdo is now out. In tune with the formats that Radio One runs on KBXX and KMJQ, why not go with an Old school rap and R&B station. Artists like N.W.A., Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Color Me Badd, P.M. Dawn, Run D.M.C., Public Enemy, etc. Just imagine the imaging, and the voiceovers..."This is Flava Flaaaaaav, and you're going ol' school on 92.1 KROI."

I know you guys are pushing for Urban Gospel on the frequency, but imagine KROI complementing KBXX like this....The Box with the new school hip hop and KROI with the old jams. Radio One already holds the #1 and #2 spots, why not make it a 1,2,3 knock out?

$0.02 well spent.

Your idea would place KROI between KBXX and KMJQ musically, but an Urban Gospel format would have broader demographic appeal within the African-American community and perhaps bring more total listeners to the Radio One cluster.

R&B oldies would be another possibility on 92.1, but RO would have to skew KMJQ a little younger.

The new 106.5 Recuerdo will probably do lots of damage to La Mera Mera, so we may see some changes on 92.1 next summer.

So, the old school rap/hip hop idea would actually hurt The Box and Majic? Hmm...shows what I know. I would think that it would be more complimentary than detrimental. Thank God I'm not a programmer. I wonder how much damage KOVE will inflict on KLOL? The target audience is different, but with the below mentioned success of KEGL in Dallas, I'd assume that Mega would take a hit as well, being that Recuerdo/La Preciosa is on fire the way it is.

Hey, it works on Sirius, FWIW :)

I'm not necessarily saying this would be the OPTIMAL format for KROI, mind you ... But, hey, it certainly works on Sirius! I tune in to this stream every now and then and, while it's not my #1 stream, I generally find it to be entertaining when I do tune in.

Question is, would it be any more successful than, say, alternative oldies? My first guess is, probably, to an extent, given the support out there for hip hop these days.

(FWIW, here's what Sirius's website says about 43 Backspin)

"Put on your Adidas and your Kangol hat and join the party—you'll hear nothing but the early days of Hip-Hop. Tune in to one of the original pioneers of old skool rap, Kurtis Blow, every weeknight (7 pm – 1 am ET)."

"What we play: Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, Sugar Hill Gang, Salt-N-Pepa, LL Cool J, Heavy D, Digital Underground, Queen Latifah and many more."
