Sinclair buys Tribune

It doesn't. Tribune has no radio stations in Seattle.

That is true...but everyone here knows that Sinclair is in the TV business and not radio (and you can tell by what comes out of their AM's here in Seattle). Maybe they should just sell them off...maybe to Hubbard.

I agree with Kelly on this. However, and this a BIG however, Sinclair may be divesting their radio properties soon perhaps just because of this deal. As in cash reserves. If that happened, the speculation would be wild as to who the buyers would be.

There would be a negative benefit for Sinclair to sell off the Seattle radio properties because all radio properties everywhere, have been devalued since 2007 around the recession. Keeping the radio stations and benefiting from the added BCF (Broadcast Cash Flow) additive with KOMO, KUNS and now KCPQ, is a better bet than selling just because they're radio stations.

Certainly, if someone made them a big offer Sinclair couldn't refuse, anyone would consider selling. These days, that sort of thing doesn't seem to happen anymore. Nobody overpays for radio stations, mainly because there are so many for sale.

Holding over selling would be the disciplined approach. I don't know how much debt Sinclair is carrying, however. Generally speaking, dealmaking prevails over rationality but who knows how this will play out.

Also working against selling the radio properties is how two of the CBS/Entercom stations are also on the market. And don't forget KOMO Radio is running an expensive format to operate. Hubbard buying any of them doesn't have an upside and Warm is doing dandy dismantling Star right now.

This is the place where one of Seattle's billionaires decides to buy a radio station. Let's see if it happens.

On the TV side, this would be a good chance for FOX to obtain KCPQ and KZJO, making them O&Os.

On the Radio side, if Sinclair wants out of the radio business, they'd have KPLZ, KVI, KOMO-AM, and now WGN-AM in Chicago, to sell as a package to someone more into the radio business...

Oh, the speculation is hilarious. Unless someone's willing to pay an absurd amount of money Sinclair ain't selling the Seattle stations. Chicago, maybe. It's easier to spin one than three.

I nearly spit my coffee when I read this. You are out of your mind if you think that would really happen.

Fox O&O will likey buy KCPQ, and that is exactly what Sinclair wanted. It's a chess game, and both Sinclair and Fox win. Fox gets the Seahawks, and Sinclair gets a good price for the Tribune station. Win-win.

Again, you're assuming FOX is buying more stations to O&O. There is no indication FOX is interested in Seattle, as they could have worked much more of a sweetheart deal with Tribune a few months ago.

Does anyone think Sinclair would just sell Univision station and JoeTV? That way they can keep KOMO & Q13 and stay under the 2 max? or turn the Univision into a digital channel and shut down the actual channel for Univision?

It's been a two-station ownership limit (duopolies) since the late 90's. Depending on the number of stations in a market, groups can own more than two. In the case of Seattle under the new ownership cap, Sinclair doesn't need to sell KUNS.

What is it about this discussion board, that everyone is so eager to anticipate forced-selling of stations, radio or TV?
