By "give up" they mean "turn in the licenses."
This is one heck of a bluff by Sinclair. And maybe it's just me, but I don't think it will work. The FCC can reject sales that are not in the public interest, and I have to think "buying highly rated network affiliated stations [in at least one case with very highly-regarded weather department] solely to shut them down" won't pass as "in the public interest." I could be wrong, but that's my read on it.

Sinclair Broadcast Group should just finally give up on the Allbritton TV station acquisition deal altogether right now and putting more focus on helping Buckeye Cable System at letting them have the proper chance at negotiating for carriage of WNWO in Toledo, Ohio without any difficulties and any interference whatsoever.
Sinclair Broadcast Group why not letwould be better off letting another broadcasting group have most of the Allbritton stations for a chance right now with me wanting Hearst having KTUL, KATV, WBMA LD-WJSU-WCFT, WCIV, and WSET as well as acquiring WABM to replace WBMA as the flagship of ABC in Birmingham, Alabama and use it for airing ABC on a full power signal in the Birmingham, Alabama proper and WMMP to form a duopoly with WCIV from Sinclair under Hearst while Hearst can trade and swap WJLA to ABC/Disney for WTVD from ABC/Disney as a way for Hearst to continue to keep WBAL in Baltimore for competitive reasons within the Washington D. C. and Baltimore TV DMA markets and can trade and swap WHTM to keep WGAL in Lancaster and existing station WMOR to E. W. Scripps with WMOR in a duopoly with WFTS and picks up either WKBW or KMGH from E. W. Scripps with KMGH likely being the prime candidate to go to Hearst if Hearst bought Allbritton in it's entirely and to meet FCC rules and regulation guidelines.
Sinclair would be better off no longer having any TV broadcasting presence in Birmingham, AL, Charleston, SC, and Harrisburg, PA with WTTO-WDBB, and WTAT being taking over by Raycom and WHP and WLYH being taking over by Nexstar and the same can also be said in Greensboro, SC, Saint Louis, MO, Toledo, OH, and Flint, MI with Sinclair keeping WXLV in WSG airing FOX with WGHP regaining ABC, giving KDNL in STL to Gannett and run it with CW and MYNET while KPLR gets FOX and KTVI gets ABC and prime candidate for being bought by Hearst if KTVI were to be affiliated with ABC ever again due to ABC not happy with KDNL and WXLV ability to be full pledged ABC affiliates, allowing Media General to pick up WNWO in Toledo and WEYI and WBSF in Flint from the Barrington merger deal in order for the NBC affiliation to stay on both WNWO and WEYI along with other Barrington stations WLUC and WPBN-WTOM/WGTU-WGTQ, and non Barrington stations such as WTTA, WWHO, and WRLH and for Buckeye Cable to be able to carry WNWO again without being forced to carry a not yet launched news channel from the not yet approved Allbritton merger deal that will ultimately be cancelled and called off entirely under David Smith, Barry Faber, David Amy, and Sinclair control with Media General allowing Sinclair to fully control KRON in San Francisco from the Young merger deal mainly to streamline operations within both Sinclair and Media General corporately.
BTW, I do belong in the Omaha TV DMA market with KPTM and KXVO and Sioux City TV DMA market with KPTH and KMEG up to the north from the Titan TV deal.
Also, BTW, If Sinclair's acquisition of Allbritton TV stations goes through, I feel David Smith, Barry Faber, David Amy, and Sinclair will fail to allow all the small, medium, and large size and scale MSOs to carry their stations without Sinclair's permission till the MSOs is willing to agreed to pay $2.40-3 (($.50 NBC, ABC, or FOX), ($.90 CBS), ($.25 CW, or MYNET), $1.00 local and syndication, $.90-1.50 to help launch the cable news channel Sinclair is launching) dollars for the privilege and right to carry Sinclair's stations and agreed to carry the new cable news channel that Sinclair is using to take WJLA's News Channel 8 into a national news channel for Sinclair that isn't yet on the air that Sinclair wants all the cable and satellite to carry the cable channel on cable and satellite basic tier as part of all retransmission consent contracts by engaging in a take it or leave it deal using old rigid Paramount Pictures block booking and blind bidding and old RKO General bribery and dishonest behavioral practices in retransmission consent deals to put their news and opinions on the planned news channel that Sinclair will launch if their planned acquisition of TV stations from Allbritton were to go through the FCC, the FTC, and the DOJ by gambling and self destructing their business future themselves by playing Russian Roulette.
I hope the heads at ABC over in New York and at Disney over in Burbank read my comment and like my idea of wanting ABC/Disney having WJLA to themselves, E. W. Scripps having WHTM to themselves, and Hearst having WSET, WCIV, KATV, KTUL, and WBMA/WCFT/WJSU and acquiring WABM and WMMP to themselves while letting WGHP and KTVI regaining the ABC affiliation under Tribune ownership and Tribune would run them with the ABC affiliation to themselves way better than WXLV and KDNL combined under Sinclair control.
