Sinclair selling KOMO, KVI & KPLZ

It could hurt a stations' pocketbook. If you just arbitrarily change the name to whatever, that means buying new promotional materials, brand registration costs, plus on air imaging.
Not to mention losing any brand equity that might exist. Z100 in Portland has used that name for almost 40 years, Z100 in New York even longer.

Well there you go. You've officially crossed over into DX'ing a smartspeaker.
LOL. Besides that being amusing, the fact is that stations don't get much if any revenue from listeners outside their market. While many streams have other ads inserted into them, the listening to all but some... and few... very famous and unique stations outside their market is minimal or less.

For example, Knoxville has a country station that for decades has been a huge #1 in the market. But how many people outside eastern Tennessee would really spend a lot of time listening to WIVK?

Otherwise, unless stations start calling themselves by geographic or local names, there is limited resolution to this. Let's see... New York City could have FMs named after "Empire", "Manhattan", and a few other local landmarks or names, but who wants to listen to "Amsterdam 101"?

That wide list on Kplz has been tightened. I'm sure there's more to come. Another hot a/c? Hard to believe. Already a crowed field. Right now, Warm and Star, Khtp seem to be in closest battle for that title. I'm sure research could find something. They may be serving a purpose in their cluster, and changing to hot ac would cost a lot, especially if it's going to done right.

Yes, but how many "Y1073" stations are there?

Will it help radio against competition? I don't know, but it couldn't hurt. I have an equally obsessed radio friend in New York, and we decided to play around with her smart speaker one day. We were trying to get it to play among others Alt 92.3 in New Orleans. If you told it to simply play Alt 92.3 however, it would come up with New York. We had to tell it to play Alt 92.3 from iHeart Radio in order to get New Orleans. There has also been documented confusion between stations with similar brands.

I have occasionally found my smartspeaker giving me a different station than the one I requested, too. When that has happened, I've found myself wondering how many people would even notice if the two stations had the same format. During my radio days, I found that very few listeners were actually listening. Radio is a passive medium, and most of us aren't as noteworthy as we'd like to think we are. My favorite was when I was training a new talent, and she referred to Hootie and the Blowfish as “Hootie and the Bulls**t” on-air. No one called into the station, and we never received any complaints. After the station had a big layoff, she survived, and I didn’t!

I noticed the change back today When you look at their Facebook page, a lot of PO'ed listeners. One glad that the "screaming" has stopped after three days and back to normal. Lol Maybe, listener revolt made management change their mind. Lotus seems like they can't figure out what to do exactly with their new Seattle cluster.

A significant change in ownership that goes included a divorce from a major TV operation and a change in call letters and top management is going to have growing pains (or "transitional pains") for many weeks if not months. There are many un-heard areas such as accounting and engineering where the separation can bring a lot of stress if not confusion and even some mistakes.

Even the station's FCC attorney and its consulting engineer will change. The internal systems of Lotus will not be the same as those of the previous owner. And so on.

Give them some time... and give them a break; this is a major transition.

KUBE to AC? Wouldn’t be the first time they battled KPLZ in a format fight. Back in the 80’s KPLZ challenged KUBE with a top40 format and actually won a few rounds. It all kind of collapsed in the 90’s however, if memory serves me.

Yes, I remember Kent Alan calling Kube on the air. I think it Tom Hutley they had on. Also there was Urban Assult vehicle. Around 90,91 Kube went to Pirate radio, then came hiphop. I remember Kplz going to party radio, then came Star. David, I've always thought 1st impression is important in every aspect of life. Give listen next week and love to hear your impression. Still interested in the 9 stations you owned and where? You for sure have me beat for years in the biz. I started at 15, I think Seatown may have started at a younger age at C 89?

Kelly had the big boys scared with C89, at one point may have been #1. I remember going to one their dances. Massive crowd.

Certainly David and Kelly raise good points. Certainly, if stations are already planning rebrandings, they should consider confusion with other stations. Bill, to answer your question, there aren't any that I can think of. Of your stations, I think the only one that matches anything else is Sunny 102.1, matching Syracuse NY.

Or rebrand using CALL LETTERS 🙂

Guess being new on here doesn't earn answers from the big dogs here. Don't ask questions because my 50 years in broadcasting is not good enough. What a great vibe!

Some websites are snowflake friendly, this one not so much. But seriously, stop taking yourself so seriously! It's only radio and you know radio doesn't care about you near as much as you care about it! 44 years in the biz here and no comment on any gossip site is going to ruin my vibe.

Sorry, I don't think anyone was intentionally ignoring you. What was the question?

Think of this board as working in radio. You have a staff where everyone has a different opinion on how things should be done. Management that tells you like it is, whether you like it or not. And those occasional personality conflicts, and of course, dealing with the big ego"s. But, it's fun.

Related: Working in any media requires thick skin. You are going to get congratulations and you are going to get criticism. Kind of goes with the territory. And, yes, it flows into forums like this.
Even to this day, I tell the folks that work for me; if nobody is complaining or all worked up about something, all is good.
If you got into the biz for frequent pats on the back and ataboy's, you're in the wrong line of work.
