Streaming free at watchstadium.com right now with a replay of an ABC Florida State-Miami game from 1991. How did Sinclair pry the rights to old ABC telecasts away from Disney/ESPN?
That's an interesting question. My first thought when I read the OP was have they cleared these rights? Some think they because they have local rights, it transfers to national, and it doesn't. I know ESPN has a Classic channel where they're airing old ABC broadcasts. The company spent time and money transferring those games from 2 inch quad tapes to digital for that purpose. So we'll see what happens with this. The fact that it's a digi-net may help. But rights are rights, and they cost money.
Its basically the old American Sports Network that Sinclair owned. This version has more "minor" sports like soccer and volleyball

Wow. I hope they have their legal ducks in a row, because recent games are now ESPN Classic's bread and butter. Much of what that network shows is from the past few years, although a good number of decades-old games still air.
The copyright to a number of game recordings are owned by the leagues, conferences, or teams, instead of the networks who telecast them. So it is probable that Sinclair Stadium bought these re-run rights from the ACC, instead of Disney/ESPN.
Website doesn't appear to be quite ready; they promote finding your local OTA channel on their "where to watch" page, but there's no link. Should have a lot of stations, especially after the Tribune deal is finalized. However if those subchannels are in SD it will be a pretty blah viewing experience. But I would imagine Sinclair is looking ahead to ATSC 3.0 and its increased digital bandwidth.
My take, and I'm a huge lover of sports TV, is that the technical quality isn't all that will be "blah." I mean, Louisiana Tech vs Western Kentucky? I'd rather watch checkers.
Meaning that if ESPN Classic wanted to show a full day of classic Florida State-Miami games (most of which, IIRC, ended on missed Seminole field goals), that 1991 game, which aired originally on ABC, would not be available for airing by the company that originally produced, aired and taped it? Or can two entities own rerun rights to the same broadcast of the same game? Something still seems odd about this.
I believe there's no exclusivity to an archived broadcast. So the answer to your question is yes.
You can have exclusivity for the original game, and a certain number of repeats. But after that it's fair game (so to speak).
The talent may be another discussion, depending on the AFTRA arrangement.
It is possible that ESPN may not have the rights to re-air a game they produced decades ago - or ESPN may have secured those rights in perpetuity as part of its production deal.
I was trying to point out that the discretion is at the hands of the conference, not a competing television network.
Looks like they've put together a decent library of old major college games. That might just get them viewers as an OTA subchannel, or even as a cable must-carry, since ESPN Classic is usually on a premium sports tier. It's something different from old movies and TV shows, anyway. I wonder what they're going to do for live sports during the summer, when the colleges aren't playing.
I wonder if they will put it on WWMT .4 Stadium although I don't care if they do or don't as Charter Spectrum hasn't put WWMT .3 Comet on their systems in West Michigan but I'm not into the Comet from the shows I have seen on TV guide online. I'd watch Stadium if there is a classic football game that interests me.
