Singer Paul Davis passes away

He had a huge hit single back in 1978 with "I Go Crazy", and in the early 80's with a song called "Cool Night". He died on his Birthday at 60 years old.

Sad to see this. He also had some cross-country songs that I still play.

AC-Pop/CHR-Country and Christian Charted hits, as well.. We'll miss the long haired mello-man.... See ya' on the other side "PD"...

I like that song! Gee, what did he pass away from? 60 years old is way, way too young!

Scott

Don't forget "'65 Love Affair" on Top 40. He had a country hit in the late '80s with "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love" with Tanya Tucker and Paul Overstreet.

God Bless Paul and his family.

I always liked "Do Right"- kind of a religous tune...back when we'd still play "Powerline" I remember it being on there when it was new. R.I.P Paul! Great Singer!

I remember back in, I believe, late-1986 he was shot in the stomach outside a hotel (I forget where) by a thug on the run. He recovered OK, but I guess he couldn't dodge this latest 'bullet.' Too bad! I liked some of his music. I still have a CD3 "EP" of his Arista put out in the late '80s containing: "Cool Night"; "'65 Love Affair" and "Love Or Let Me Be Lonely".

I wish someone could check this out to be certain, but I believe "I Go Crazy" holds the record for the longest, slowest climb up the charts for a single, at least for the pre-Soundscan days! Seemed like it took at least three months just from the time it first made the 40 until it got into the top 10, which is probably a record for any single with a similar peak position.

"I Go Crazy" did indeed take forever to become a hit, developing first (as a lot of records did in those days) at smaller market Southern stations in late summer/early fall '77 and not reaching some major markets until spring '78. Growing up outside Washington, D.C., I heard it on WPRW Manassas, Va.--which was much more like a Southern station in its timing--many months before it finally reached WPGC.

Really a Shame, I started in Radio at WDAL in 1968 when Paul was Just getting started!
Very Talented and a Hell of a Guy!

This is really sad. Just a few weeks ago I was reflecting on all the great songs I enjoyed from Paul Davis. I even looked up his myspace page..the first words on it were "Hello girl it's been awhile". He had fans on there from all over the world, including younger fans who must have discovered his music in recent years.

"I Go Crazy" was indeed a song that spent a record amount of weeks on the chart. This is fresh in my mind, I recently heard an American Top 40-the70s show from March 1978 and Casey Kasem made a big deal about how the song first hit the Hot 100 in the Summer (of 1977) slowly climed the chart and was still going strong all those months latter. What a haunting yet beautiful song that is. There is actually a techno dance cover version of it performed by a female artist, I heard it in the supermarket just the other night.

For some reason it shakes me up more when I hear about the musical artists I grew up on passing away than when I hear about more contemporary stars dying of say drug overdoses at a young age.

Was really saddened to hear about this. I really loved Paul's songs, but am especially fond of "Sweet Life." When I was dating my future wife, I used to play that song at the station where I worked. As I listened to the words, it painted the same picture I wanted for our marriage, especially the part where he sings "She's got your eyes, she's got my nose. And I get high just watchin' her grow!" Three years into our marriage, we had that little girl and my wife and I still marvel at the great treasure God blessed us with.

Thanks for your music.......thanks for the "Sweet Life."

Cascada's the band that does it. Very cool version.
