Single Anchor Newscasts

How many people think that more and more stations will go with a single anchor on their newcasts? I noticed that CBS is doing this in Chicago on a couple of their nightly newscasts. It is a easy way to save money and if it catches on, it will soon be a norm for the industry. With an anchor salary gone, they could hire more reporters and photographers and do more substance journalism on the newscasts.

Ahhh No. They won't use the saved money to hire more photogs and reporters. One soon photog and reporter will be combined into one job at most stations. Two the savings will go to trying to perserve cash flow and boost profits. Stations are not reinvesting the savings from job cuts into their product.

From what I can tell, a lot of places are investing what little revenue they have into either the DTV transition or new media ventures. I've seen a lot of Web sites get revamped lately in an effort to pick up more traffic. Traditional news media has been losing ground in a battle against the blogosphere for a while and they're trying to catch up.

FOX 5(WAGA) has been doing this for years now on its 12noon newscast with Lisa Rayam. The newsedge at 11pm also with Tom Hayes. The weekend morning news is done by Denise Dillon alone.

CBS Atlanta(WGCL) has been also doing it for years with Helen Neil at noon. By the looks of things, I wonder how long Stephany Fisher will do the 4pm, 6pm and 11pm newscast solo. I know Kim Fettig sometimes pair with her since Bill Gaines is no longer with them. All of there weekend newscast are done with one anchor, Daniele Knox.

11 ALIVE (WXIA) uses Brenda Wood as the solo desk anchor on the 7pm news. The only other time I know that 11 Alive has one desk anchor is on the weekend morning news.

Ch.2 ACTION NEWS(WSB) usually never has one anchor at the desk alone unless someone has the day off. The weekend morning newscast have gone back to just using one anchor.
