Sirius Canada: Globe & Mail article

Sirius Canadian channels in the USA -- updated info

Just got off the phone with Sirius on this.

Plans are to have 5 of the 8 [sic -- the Canadian Sirius website says
there are 10] Canadian channels available to US subscribers when the
service is launched in early December.

Sirius' corporate communications manager is not sure if the decision
has yet been made regarding which 5 will be offered.

The full Canadian lineup will be offered to US subscribers in early
2006, but it appears you'll need to get a new receiver -- with a new
chipset -- to get the additional channels.

Richard / Allentown, PA

With the Can-con, will Sirius expand its lineup or replace five streams?

That news (below) covers just about everything I wanted to know. (Ok, I'd also like to know which five streams will be available -- surely CBC Radio One, so I guess the question is which other four, and I think that was at least partly covered in an earlier thread.)

But here are the other big questions as regards Sirius US: Will Sirius ADD five Canadian streams, or will Sirius DELETE five streams and REPLACE them with Canadian streams? And if the latter is true, which five streams will be deleted?

I'll be pleased if Sirius ADDS five Canadian streams, but concerned about my core news/talk streams if Sirius DELETES and REPLACES streams.

FWIW, my core news/talk streams include (as if you haven't guessed by now) BBC World Service News, World Radio Network, Sirius OutQ, CNN (by the way, while I'm glad Sirius's lineup includes CNN, I also miss CNN Headline News) and Public Radio International, as well as possibly ABC News and Talk, at least in the morning. Of course, I'm occasionally interested in other news/talk streams as well -- I've heard some interesting programming on the NPR streams and C-SPAN, for example. (I do still wish at least one of the NPR streams would air "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered.")

(I might add that it looks like CBC Radio One just might offer the above streams some additional competition in the mornings; we shall see.)

Additionally (of course), I also listen to Sirius for music, which is another "big deal" to me, and I like a number of Sirius's music streams. But that seems like it might be a topic for another post.

According to www.siriusbackstage.com Sirius will not be deleting channels for the Canadian channels.

Re: With the Can-con, will Sirius expand its lineup or replace five streams?

The term used was "added", not "substituted" or "replaced", so I believe we won't lose existing channels.

My contact didn't elaborate on the 5 services to be offered, but my guess is that CBC R1 and R3 will be part of the 5. I prompted him on those, but he wouldn't take the bait.

As has been discussed, NPR protected its legacy stations by withholding ATC and ME from satellite. That's a reasonable compromise IMO.

I haven't listened to OutQ -- that is not an interest of mine -- but my spoken-word favorites include the rest of your list.

Great that they're not axing channels; new receiver needed though?

That Sirius Backstage report is awesome if true, that Sirius isn't axing streams in order to add the Canadian channels.

I noticed below that someone is claiming we'll need to buy new radios (and, hence, new subscriptions?) to hear the full Canadian lineup.

If I read this poster's comments literally, though, that wouldn't apply to the five streams Sirius is reportedly adding in December, presumably including CBC Radio One -- correct?

One needs to buy a whole new radio and subscription in order to hear the Canadian streams? Sheesh! Say it isn't so!

(On the other hand, if that merely applies to the French-language streams, I can live with that -- I don't speak French, beyond a few words, I think -- and, while I'd be interested in learning the language, that's a project for another year.)

I dont know about you guys, but im hoping the Energie2 station will be available to U.S subscribers. If it is anything like the Energie Network in Canada, it will be about a 50/50 mix of American, and French Top 40 hits. This is the Canadian Channel I most likely would want added to the Lineup. I guess I will hold back on replacing my Sirius Receiver just yet, I want to have the Canadian channels as an option. It would be really be cool if Z-103.5 Toronto launched its own Satelite only Comercial Free SUB channel...THOUGHTS

As long as they offer CBC Radio One, I'll be happy.
