I've had a Sirius radio in my car for a little over a year. On Friday I was on a long drive listening and the radio just died. I called customer service from the road and was told that the "sportster equipment" is very tempermental and simply burns out often. I have been told that becasue more than a year has passed I can not get a replacement radio without coughing up about $100. I've never had a terrestrial radio "burn out" on me.

Any suggestions?
 
The smaller radios really have problems with heat. I've fried two radios over the years just because of the heat where I had them operating.

If you're mainly going to use Sirius in your car, I'd suggest just going for an in-dash unit. I've had a Kenwood in-dash since 2003 and it's still working perfectly.
 
I've had the Starmate 4 for a year now,love it!
My Sirius radio is located on the dashboard so I always take it off the dock when I'm not in the car for extended periods of time.
I noticed the how hot the radio gets if left baking under the windshield.
 
I live in Florida and keep my InV hooked up in the car. I'm also worried about the heat wearing it out too soon, but the directions say it could work in up to 185 degree heat (it's been almost a year now, so far so good). But I'm weighing on leaving it in the car instead of disconnecting and reconnecting the wires. Those connections also wear out. The same problem will eventually come up if one has the home and car docking kits and moves their radios around from house to car, to work, etc.
 
My radio came with an air conditioning vent connection kit, even though it's fall now next summer I may dock it there so the air conditioner may keep it cool.
 
ahh I aint making excuses for siri's horrible warranty support but do you really think it makes sense to compare a regular radio to a satellite radio? Its an entirely new and complex technology, almost like comparing a 1940 Chevy to a 2007 Checy.

Quite frankly I'm surprised mine (2 sportster replay) have been working for over 2 years. One is in the house and is on 24/7, the other in the car. of course. There are a couple of bugs.

The memory feature doesn;t work on one, if I attempt save a song title it hangs up and I have to reboot.
The other one sometimes hangs when I am replaying something and lose the signal.

What the hell service is worth the minor annoyances.
 
get an in-dash radio. you're better off, IMHO. I got an alpine for xmas two years ago along with a sirius module and haven't looked back. I would like a better in-dash radio (something that actually shows all of the scrolling content...letters tend to get cut off) but the module's never been a problem. if heat is a problem, then I don't see how a portable unit is worth the effort...unless you're getting a stiletto and carrying it with you.

Buy a new radio ,before you uses it remove the metal covers that cover the IC chips inside,then isolate the fm modualator antenna from the parts inside (i used scotch tape ) reassemble and Enjoy!
Left my radio on 24/7 3 days in a row,iits now "just warm".
Were they planned to burn out? maybe.
 
I have a first generation Sporster that was in my dad's truck till he got a new one with Sirius installed. It's a couple years old and works fine.
 
I think the newer radios are not as good as the old ones, I have a XM Pioneer very fist generation radio for about as long as XM has been around. And it still works like a champ. I live in Florida and do not have a Gararge! I know someone who got a Sirrus when sirrus first debuted (Do Not Know What brand) but his still works. I might suggest to go to a Pawn shop and find an old one and have it activated!
