Has anyone had a chance to listen to satellite radio answer to VH?

I am NOT a Sirius subscriber, but I get the music stations with my Dish Network sub.

So far, register me as impressed! Certainly, a helluva lot better than their terrestrial counterparts (altho' I can only use Philly's BEN-FM as a comparison, which hasn't tickled my sphincter so far). Call it Jack minus the commercials.

So far, here's what I've heard (and I'll try to put it in order as best as I can remember):

T. Rex "Bang a Gong (Get it On)"
War w/ Eric Burden "Spill the Wine"
KISS "Shout it Out Loud"
Quarterflash "Harden My Heart"
Bee Gees "Night Fever"
CCR "Up Around the Bend"
Men at Work "Who Can It Be Now"
Parliament "Flashlight"
Jimi Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower"

They are incorporation a drop saying "here's a sample from (insert Sirius stream here). Very clever programming strategy. Wonder if XM will eventually catch on to the VH bandwagon?

If it is like Jack, or Classic Hits, I may have to splerge (sp?) and get Sirius (I have XM right now). I do get Super Shuffle on DISH Network, but only listened a little bit, heard the Cure and something else, seems interesting! Maybe XM will get a Jack XM (or whatever they would call it, seems that XM keeps with the brand names however). That would save me some money that I don't currently have!

What I've heard today is much more diverse. I caught a Kenny Rogers song, Frank Sinatra, one other "standard", KC and the Sunshine Band, and the rock and pop mentioned in the above post.
They're also thrown in 50s and 60s stuff you wouldn't hear on a Jack or Bob or Ben station.
Oh, and a Chuck Mangione instrumental!

And with 100 channels, why not?
Frankly, it's kind of fun to see what's playing there when one of my other regular Sirius channels is playing something I don't like.

Ive Caught some Stuff from the dance Channels and some Standards On the Shuffle
 
Did I miss something? Were not Flashlight and Bee-Gees classic hits? In fact haven't they both sold millions of records just here in the US? Or is it that it's not white boy rock n' roll and 80s rock? Jeez.

Classic Hits definition

Depends on your description of the Classic Hits format. Mine would be more like a female-friendly version of Classic Rock (a-la WROR in Boston).

Neither of those songs would be on mine.

I absolutely LOVE this new channel. "Super Shuffle" sounds like "Jack FM" on steroids, if you will:) They play the typical classic hits/Hot AC/80's type stuff that most traditional "Jack FM"'s do, but they take it farther and go much deeper by including many more genres not typically heard on FM Variety Hits stations. For example, they include formats like country, hip hop, reggae, standards, smooth jazz, classic country, CHR, dance, etc. It makes for an incredibly fun mix and a true "never know what you are going to get" experience. Also, besides showing the title and artist on each song, they put a message on the screen saying "this track can also be heard on (the name of the Sirius channel that plays this type of music)". For example, if they are playing a song by The Cure, it might say "this song can also be heard on Sirius 22, First Wave", and so on. It is meant to be a variety hits channel, but it is also meant to be a "sampler" of all the Sirius music channels. They do lean a bit heavier on the classic hits/80s type songs, but they use all the other genres for lots of spice thrown in. And yes, you can truly hear Men At Work into the Beatles into Tim McGraw into Tony Bennett into Outkast into Tommy James and the Shondells into AC/DC, etc. Awesome variety! Some "Jack FM" fans will think it is too wide, but those who really appreciate all kinds of music will love it. Also, although it is really wide in genres, it pretty much sticks to "big hits" from each genre and not unknown stuff.
So anyway, as I said, I'm LOVING this channel. I'm 36 and have grown up listening and loving all types of music and radio, and this is truly like a soundtrack of my life. Great job Sirius!

Here is a sample of what was played on "Sirius Super Shuffle" from the 9Am and 10Am hours this morning (10/4). This way you can get an idea of how it flows. Also, they include other genres that aren't included in this list. It just depends on how long you listen. Here is what they played;

There's a quick sample of a couple of hours of how "Super Shuffle" on Sirius sounds. Some hours include more of one type of music than others, but it is always pretty varied with most formats included in the mix. As I said earlier, it's like "Jack FM" with even more variety. Personally, I love it. What do other Variety Hits fans think?

My definition of Classic Hits is pretty much the same as OldiesCat, a Drive (Chicago) type station, with no disco, but a lighter version of a classic rock format, and very rock based with the types of music they play.<P ID="signature">______________

Classic hits also usually plays the big R&B crossover songs of the 60s and early 70s before disco and generally doesn't play anything harder than Led Zep. The basic sound is 70s AOR before Abrams decided to go "modal" to attract the disco backlash.

Classic hits or as my friend calls it "Classic Sh*ts" can range anywhere from lite classic rock to Drive type stuff to "Hits that are classic"

But stations like The Drive are what I consider the Classic Hits radio format.


Good dose of The Beatles, CSNY, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Janis Joplin, America, Styx, Steppenwolf, Deep Purple, Elton John, Eric Clapton occational Led Zeppelin, some 60s oldies like The Turtles, The Monkees, Animals, etc, BTO, Doobie Brothers, 80s Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Squeeze, etc. On some of these stations you will also find some rhythmic stuff like The Temptations and Marvin Gaye

The imaging is usually dull and boring like that of an easy listening or smooth jazz station. It is often of the "respect the music" attitude. No talking over the songs. No crossfading. Little talk. Few liners. On The Drive you will often hear songs go into each other with no fading, like that of a CD. Nick Michaels does the imaging for The Drive.

Your description is about right. For the record, no stations in the country classifying themselves as "classic hits" are anything but "class rock light".
Nick Michaels was the original VO cat for the Arrow concept, as well.

There are some who's imaging is indeed quite non-descript. However, if you really think about it, that sort of presentation can be very attractive to those who find the constant "we're the biggest/we're the best/we play the most" approach burned into the ground and annoying (evidenced by stations like The Drive and WROR doing well these days).

And Greg Solk is doing similar imaging (and some direct segues) for the Chicago urban-leaning AC Love FM. It may not be "exciting" but it wears better with the target audience then all of the laser zaps and loud boasting of other stations (or Jack-ish snarkiness). (Solk's the OM, I don't know who Love FM's image voice is, other than that he sounds African-American.)

The Love FM image voice has that Barry White/Issac Hayes type sound. I think it fits the LOOOOOOOVE theme of the format very well.<P ID="signature">______________

Again, I love it. Our Philly VH station (BEN) sucks to begin with, but Sirius Super Shuffle puts them, and other VH stations, to absolute shame.

In fact, I've been burning hours on end of Super Shuffle onto CD-R and taking it to work. Not to mention, running it on my Part 15er and calling it "106.5 the Shuffle".

In fact, they just went from Naked Eyes to Bon Jovi to George Harrison.

My bone of contention with VH is that their playlists are too "safe" without any OH WOW pop to it!!! Score one for Sirius.
