Sirius.. The Ups and Downs

I finally re subscribed to Sirius and bough a new radio. I do enjoy BPM and Area so far,, not sure why people on XM FAN bitch about them so much.. Also BBC is pretty good, and its dance friendly. HITS 1 is a great chr when it comes to not sounding cookie cutter, but I havent heard any dance hits on their yet aside from a few crossover hits.. Kesha, Enrique-I like it ETC,, they play a slow version of Body Shots,, and our loca CHR plays the dance mix..

Anyway, what im most dissapointed in is their Rhythmic channel THE HEAT, I was expecting a party station format like Power 96 Miami or B-96 Chicago, but the station sounds just like a mainstream urban.. they even call it blazin R&B,, so its clear that they are never gonna be very dance friendly.. Also I cant seem to find a Rhythmic AC on here, unless you count The Strobe.

You have to go back to pre-merger.

When they were standalone companies, Sirius had more of a feel like mainstream radio. While "Area" was the very edgy station there, "The Beat" was about as mainstream dance as you could get. That station was basically top 40 remixes, a few core dance tracks and plenty of recurrents.

XM on the other hand geared more towards the fan of the music. "BPM", back then, leaned more on a core dance fan's taste along with having DJ's such as Armando there. The best example of what BPM was, right now, is Radio Danz. You had a channel called "The Move" which was underground house, "The System" which leaned on trance/electronica.

So when the companies merged, even though the name "BPM" stuck, the Sirius programming philosophy came in, which angered the core fans that wanted BPM as is since "The Beat" was more generic, leaning towards a casual/sometime fan versus those who wanted more of an edge and followed dance music "religiously". That's why on XM FAN as well as the BPM Facebook board, you have tons of complaints going on there, especially with the show "Bagatelle Brunch".

That's the gist of it....

Don't want to hijack or basically post the same thing over, but now, I guess I may take a page off "The Beat" with the now defunct Hit 106 here in the shore.  Hey, whatever you do to get the average listener to understand dance music, right?  ;D

I dont listen to BPM that much, it does remind me of how the beat used to sound, but I think AREA is a wonderful dance channel,, they play House, progressive, trance, Minimal, ACTUAL TECHNO, Drum n Bass, and Dudstep,, i like area alot more now then when they were strictly Dance, reminds me of how the move on XM used to sound before they went into the soulful Deep house sound,, which I personally loved both versions of the Move,, The System was great too, but alot of the trance is still heard on Area,, I didnt like the System in the begining when it was unfocused, and played the ambient stuff, but when they skewed toward trance they did a better job than Area's version of trance at the time.. My biggest complaint is not having a dance friendly CHR, or a Party station Dance Rhythmic on their,, Their doesnt seem to be enough Dance product on Hits one,, My local NOW station plays and leans on dance pop,, while I do like hits one,, i was expecting a Rhythmic,, POP Dance ACTIVE HITS (NOW) type format. The Heat hasnt played any Dance at all unless you count Usher OMG and the new Usher and Pitbull,, they even brand the station as R&B,, I havent checked out hip hop nation yet but im guessing thats gonna be too hard around the edges for me with lots of profanity,, and I seriously doubt there will be any dance product on there. But AREA, and the Dance Shows on BBC are worth the money to me,, BPM is OKAY, but its not like the ALAN FREED BPM which to me was my favorite era. But I dont have ANY FM dance stations to listen to in my car.. my mp3 player got boring,, and the shoutcast app on the blackberry is buggy and not alot of the stations work,, and I dont use it much cause it has a bug that keeps me from getting phone calls,,, Plus the I cant reliably listen to stations over 64, or 80k without buffering.

BPM and BBC Radio 1 are the only two stations on Sirius that I'd ever consider signing up for. The Heat is ok, but outside of some of the stuff in their mix shows, you can pretty much get The Heat music anywhere. The Pulse no longer pleases me now that they are 00's through today and dropped the 90's, and the 90's channel sounds too confined when everything else is blocked out except for the 90's hits. It makes it sound like some "ancient time from way back"...

However, I did learn about this from The Heat's Dj mixshow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BT5LTEjIJvM&feature=related

In some ways, I find satellite radio pointless, since they do offer a lot of pointless crap while also missing some things you can catch on your free fm dial. I'm sure people who passionately like 40's music, certain types of Jazz, a lot of rock, some reggae...etc. may disagree with me.

I think Area is a station you would enjoy K... They changed the name to Electric Area and are now playing all styles of EDM that arent mainstream enough for BPM.. Even Drum N bass, Grime and Dubstep, and Minimal, and the Baltimore Club and Electro House.
