Sirius wireless FM signal

I bought my second Sirius radio (a Sirius One). Holy crud did they dumb down the wireless FM signal in the new radios! I can't even use it! I'm going to spend my Sunday trying to figure this one out.

I believe this is the model that looks like a radar detector. A friend of mine had bought Radio Shack's version of that last year. I had noticed that the signal was not good at all. However I got creative and decided to open it up to see what they were using for a transmitter antenna. Everything is so packed inside of it, it's amazing how it works. The piece of metal that they were using for the antenna was touching the heat sink, I moved the antenna off of it and that fixed the signal problem. Does this model have an 1/8" audio out jack on it? If your car stereo has a cassette player or better yet, an 1/8" aux input, you would be better off using that with the proper wire.

I just bought myself this unit. yes the antenna has a lot to be desired. I get Stereo hiss on the radio located right next to the unit. Definitely a sign of a weak signal. The radio has an FM output. So I'm in the process of trying to find the best antenna that I can to plug into it.

UPDATE:

I just stuck one of the ends of a regular FM Antenna into the FM Output of my Stereo one receiver. The hiss instantly went away. I also can also pick the signal up on another one of my Radios in the house that I previously couldn't get a signal on. So my little experiment did the trick! It cleaned up and boosted the signal nicely.

That would be Wild. It seems that I boosted the signal to reach about 100 Feet in any direction. I may have some happy neighbors in my apartment complex right now. They are getting free Sirius Radio courtesy of me.

For the record...... what is the Maximum legal Power that I can transmit?

I pulled into my parking lot today and I was able to tune into My Sirius Radio from way outside. I guess that little adjustment to my transmitter antenna this afternoon worked. Geeez.... I better be careful. The signal is almost reaching off my property. Totally unintentional too. At least I'm getting a very clean signal in my apartment now. LOL

I need to look into adjusting the transmitter on my Sirius Stratus system. It has a crappy FM transmitter on it, compared to my old Sanyo unit. If anything good came out of it, the new unit can pickup the Canadian channels where my old unit went no higher than channel 186. For now, on the home docking unit, I have it plugged into the auxilary jacks.

In the news: Regulators, device makers try to fix other signals 'bleeding' into FM

(From the Boston Globe for Dec 21 2006)

After last Christmas, public radio stations across the country were inundated with complaints from listeners who were shocked to hear Howard Stern interrupt "Morning Edition" or their classical music lineup.

The portable satellite radios, iPods, and DVD players that people had received as gifts were playing on FM frequencies that interrupted broadcasts at the left end of the radio dial, in violation of federal regulations.

After a year of wrangling among broadcasters, regulators, and device manufacturers, public radio listeners and officials are in a holding pattern, waiting to see whether the problems the new media created for old radio have been corrected before deciding whether to take further action.
