Sirius + XM is a GO!!!

This may be just what BROADCAST RADIO will need to wake up & smell the coffee!START SERVING YOUR LOCAL MARKET!!!

For LOCAL FM radio to stay relevant it has to stay LOCAL.
The beauty of satellite radio is that its commercial free, you never lose the signal around the country, and you get a multitude of unique programming choices.
FM Radio cannot compete on that level, but it needs to remind listeners of its strengths rather then tighten its budget and remind listeners of its weaknesses.

I'm very happy to see XM and Sirius merge :)

Tell me about it. There's tons of places to get national information but the local platforms seem to be decreasing. Citadel just fired all the local jocks at the classic country station in Atlanta and replaced it with a satellite oldies format and Imus in the morning. That's not going to help long term.

I have to say this. Ever since Pulse 87 has arrived, I've started listening to satellite radio a lot LESS than I've used to (Sirius). This is the entire point that no one in corporate wants to get (or maybe they are realizing this but it may be too late??)....give fans of the music something good to listen to and they'll come! If it's going to sound like crap, people will inherently realize this....people are not as stupid as corporate tends to think.

I'd love for country fans to get a station back on SD radio. And as far as HD radio goes...get more creative with the formats to give a compelling reason for consumers to buy a unit! I like what Hot 97's HD-2 does with "Throwback" (old skool hip-hop). 'PLJ's HD-2 and HD-3 are interesting. But I'd like to see more challenges.

Even though I am happy with Pulse, I'd like to see a broadcaster on HD do a "DJ Mix" format (similar to an "Area 33" on Sirius where dance music goes DEEP underground into places like house music lounges, world DJ's, etc.). Granted, that type of format could NEVER work on regular terrestrial radio....but for HD, it could turn people on. Or for New York....a "gay" format (I know in some markets they have "Pride" on HD)...issues pertaining to the gay community, and there is a significant population here. Heck...open up a "Caribbean" station on HD as well...maybe with some collaboration with some of the "pirates" out there, it is win-win situation. And if colleges don't want to use their HD-2's and up, they can certainly "lease" it out to programmers (provided that the FCC takes the "non-comm" restriction off stations below 92 using the HD bandwidth.)

A lot can be done.....just up to the major players to have the balls to do something with it.
