SIRIUS/XM Merger Gaining Support

I have mixed emotions on this. In a way I like to see them merge, but I do not like monopolies. Wish there were more providers. I am sure there will be within 5 years, wireless, satellite, vehicle WiFi.

From a technology standpoint, satellite delivery will be old news in a few years. With wireless broadband and the cell phone companies approaching 100% coverage, you'll be able to stream from the Internet everywhere. That will change the landscape yet again.

While I believe this will be an option I do not see sat feeds to be "old news" anytime soon. The sat companies will keep up and offer the same type of broadband service that the wireless companies have been promising for years. I cant rule out sat feeds just yet, it's still in its own infancy.

With spot beams we could even see local/region programming.

Which, merger or not, is and will still be prohibited. Heck, the NAB has their panties in a wad over traffic and weather channels being "local" despite being broadcast CONUS. They won't cave to spotbeams.

If there were technological benefits to the merger I'd be more for it. XM and Sirius were supposed to work on radio interoperability as a condition of their licensing, but that never happened. If, post merger all satellite radio systems could be software updated to suddenly see both services, it might be more of a benefit. Twice the bandwidth = more programming, better sound quality (it's bad on both now) and possibly more redundant coverage.

Instead, those concepts are so far off in the future they're not even being seriously considered at this point.

I heard that Congress actually approved the merger Tuesday; now we still have, what? The FCC, the DOJ, the shareholders? There's still some hurdles yet.

So do you think that the NAB is working on a soon to be outdated business model?

This would be one way to save the local on-air talent so some degree and free up the terrestrial spectrum for something else.
