Sirius/XM Merger: It was eventually going to happen.

From my post on the XM Board, which questioned the veracity of The New York Post:

The real question is whether this is reality or Mel's patented posturing and masterful maneuvering, which have gone on over the last 18 months. Not to demean the Post, but one might expect a story of this magnitude to be found in The Wall Street Journal or Radio & Records. As of this writing, it has not.

Now we know the story is legitimate and Mel will be popping open the Dom. Radio & Records updated its website and the news is being reported in other forums. Props to the NY Post for scooping the other news services.

Let the real posturing and speculation begin! Is Wall Street going to spring into action, will the FCC approve or disprove, will the Justice Department scrutinize the deal and will Congress, populated by a Democratic majority, approve.

So many questions... so few answers. Don't touch that dial!

Check "The Business of Radio" for more on this subject. Since it's a national, not local discussion, that's probably a more appropriate forum for comments.

Not to brag, but a very long time ago, when it was first announced that Sirius and XM would be created, I predicted that because of their financial situations, both companies would eventually merge. I was right.

This is not a political statement, but there are some Democrats in Congress who have been vocal critics of deregulation. And while satellite radio doesn't fall under the same rules as terrestrial radio, I have to wonder if Congress will give this proposed merger Carte Blanche' or ask some serious questions?

So then, everyone has to hand in their recievers to exchange them for a new reciever that accepts both XM and sirius signals...?

It's too early to tell.

Here's my two cents:

Leave both services intact as separate entities. This might help ease regulatory hurdles, listener lawsuits, shareholder suits, etc. Combine as much infrastructure as possible; billing, tech support, marketing, etc.

Develop radios that will support both services. Develop a subscription plan that includes both.

I'm sure many will argue that there's no need for a lot of the duplication in many of the music channels and that a cost savings could be achieved by shutting most of it down. Agreed, but I think it will be a mess and the risk of losing MANY subscribers of one or the other is possible if mass changes are made too quickly.

It's gonna be interesting.

it had to happen...i wonder when it will actually happen and what will happen to the people tho paid for the lifetime subscriptions for sirius
