SiriusXM Love Preemptions

I show my age here. The last time I watched "This Week In Baseball," Mel Allen was voicing it. Did Brainard succeed Allen?

Mel died in 1996, and they had some celebrity hosts for a few years. Buzz took over in 2000, and at the end of the show, he'd pitch it to a claymation of Mel, who'd tag the show out with the signature line. But I believe the syndicated show was canceled in 2012. It may be on the MLB channel now.

The Love Channel is back, probably returning just after Labor Day. Perhaps someone knows exactly when. In the handful of times I've listened, it appears the playlist has grown older. I've heard mostly 70s whereas prior to the summer hiatus, there were 80s, 90s, and even this century's titles in the mix besides 70s and even older.

We're in September. In just 2 months, the Christmas formats begin and 'Love' will probably flip to that once again. These disruptions are ahelluva way to do business and a sure way to tarnish your brand. I found myself listening to "The Bridge" quite often over the summer and it kind of grew on me.

To add to my last post where I said "it appears the playlist has grown older," I'd like to clarify that a bit. There's occasional 90s and 00's titles, perhaps 10s too but not in the frequency presented as was the case prior to the summer preemption to "Yacht Rock Radio."

In my humble opinion, the Love Channel is sounding better than ever. So, there was a little fine tuning and something that I'm sure happens on all the SiriusXM channels.

Christmas/holiday programing will probably become a reality shortly after Halloween. As in the same case with commercial radio, sometimes your favorite station will go wall to wall holiday music and it seems to come earlier and earlier. Some of us may prefer hearing holiday songs after Thanksgiving and on a gradual basis but apparently there's appeal for those Yule tunes earlier and 24/7.

As far as Yacht Rock goes, without beating a dead horse, I have no idea why SiriusXM disrupts the Love Channel for that narrow and extremely repetitive format. Time will tell if YR returns.

I have never heard anyone refer to The Love Channel before.
You might be thinking of SiriusXM Love which is similar to the Cantilever Bridge Channel.

It gets a lot of positive response on Facebook (although I'm fully aware that SXM tolerates no negativity and bans nearly all posters who criticize its programming), so there are enough mid-double-digit musical IQ listeners out there to justify its recurrent presence.

Sorry for the late response. This is one of those out of sight boards that I don't often check out. My wife and others I know identity SiriusXM formats by channel number or brand. The title of this thread clearly identifies the proper name "SiriusXM Love" but again, the average person doesn't say all of that because of redundancy. It's understood it's SiriusXM so why bother saying that again.

Over the years, I've learned a good way to spot radio pros from listeners is in how they acknowledge commercial radio stations. Unless the brand is clearly in the calls, the average listener will say they listen to 96.1 (frequency designation) or they will give the brand name such as Lite FM etc. Ratings diaries give a number of options to identify a station from the call letters to frequency to the brand name or even identifying the broadcaster's name. Stations spend a lot of money on brand but I still find the whole subject of listener impressions with regard to brand an interesting one.

On the subject at hand, "SiriusXM Love" will go all Christmas this Friday, October 25 up to December 26. The Hallmark Channel (if that's the correct name) will return once again. Much too early and long in duration for my taste. But, I'm sure retail outlets who have SiriusXM will be tuned in. Christmas/holiday music has been proven ato be an effective sales tool to get customers in the right frame of mind to shop and buy.

There will be several Christmas channels available on Sirius by November 1. Look for Holly, Holiday Traditions, and Country Christmas next week. This is the first, and it's sponsored by Hallmark. Way for SXM to make money on what's supposed to be commercial-free music channels. It starts on the 25th so they can be billed for 2 months.

And I think Holly makes a move partway through the season this year. Unlike last year when holiday traditions and Holly existed side by side for a change.

I really enjoy listening to SiriusXM's "Love." There's a large library that spans at least 5 decades. However, this station/genre gets replaced periodically throughout the year with other formats such as Christmas formatting and Yacht Rock Radio. The latter is simply awful. The music is repetitive and there's a narrow time period of songs featured. The voice image guy is made to sound like Thurston Howell III from the old Gilligan's Island TV show. I can't listen to it for any good length of time.

In the Florida board in a "Measuring Audience" string, I asked if SiriusXM has a way of determining the popularity of their various channels. The answer I got revolved around their doing their own internal feedback solicitation such as through subscriber surveys etc. But this was an educated guess as to how they measure listening and not actual knowledge. Are way saying "Love" doesn't have enough listening to justify these disruptions?

Just as in commercial radio formats, some go all Christmas during the holidays and many times this is a tradition. I have less of an issue with that than the Yacht Rock replacement for all summer. If commercial radio preempted a format as much as SiriusXM does in the Love example, that format would appear doomed.

I also enjoy Love Channel 70 when they aren’t messing around with it. Take a channel a unique music format and trash it not once but twice a year. Typical broadcaster!

Thanks, Mike. On a side note, I've enjoyed your posts over the years, especially with regard to South Florida radio. Missteps happen in every market. There's some bright spots too. SiriusXM has merits but the wow factors aren't what they used to be, at least to me. And so it goes I guess.
