SiriusXM Makes Streaming Platform Free Through May 15

SiriusXM announced that it will make its entire platform available via its streaming apps for free through May 15.

The platform also announced it will add or return a few channels on Wednesday, April 1. Channel 179 will become “#StayHome Radio” featuring “happy and uplifting songs from artists like Lizzo and Coldplay to P!nk and Bob Marley”. Channel 177 will be “The Top 1000 Channel” featuring two week long countdowns of the top 1000 songs in different genres. First will be Classic Rock, followed be Oldies, Alternative Rock, Country, R&B, Hard Rock and Hip-Hop.

This is a special move SiriusXM is doing for now.
 
That’s an interesting move. Does the music sound any better on the internet than it does over the satellite? Even when I was a subscriber I listened to very little music. It was such horrendously poor sound quality I just couldn’t take it for long (on most channels).

Yes, it's essentially the Pandora platform.
 
The quality of the streaming is quite good. SXM assumes the majority is listening to streaming outside the car and that the satellites are used in-car only. The sats work regardless of cell coverage, an advantage when traveling.

It would appear that SXM is upgrading their streaming. I got a notification that some older streaming devices (web radios in my case) might stop working as of 3-31-20. (Perhaps they're replacing MP3 streams with more bandwidth-efficient AAC+ v2?) In any case, all my devices still work as of today.
 
Maybe I’ll give it a try. When I was a subscriber, I used a very small portable unit. I thought Pioneer made them, but maybe not. It was about the size of a pack of cards or cigarettes or so. I also had an antenna and cradle so I could use it indoors. It was amazing to try to use it on its own inside the house. I would receive nothing in most places, but if it was in exactly the right place on my nightstand it would work fine (no outside antenna, just the unit). Move it 5mm and the signal was gone.

Anyway, that’s all several years ago now. Thanks for the info.

The system uses three types of diversity reception: time, frequency, and space, but it works best when you are moving.
If you are moving, you will receive a live and a delayed feed from each of two satellites, plus a terrestrial repeater.
The late MobaHO! called them "gap fillers".
 
It’s a neat system, to me. There’s a freeway near where I live now that goes through a tunnel. I know that SXM works in there via the terrestrial repeater system (have heard it during free trials in the car). When I was a subscriber, however, I lived in a place where there were no terrestrial repeaters within _at least_ 250 miles. :)
 
Bumping up an old one, but I've started steaming SiriusXM at home using the Windows App. It's still free if you're already a subscriber.

Kind of had it with FM where I'm at. Since Covid, and lost advertising revenue, many stations are running more ads from lower paying clients. I get it and I feel bad for them, but that's not what I want to listen to.

The streaming quality is pretty darn good on the maximum setting, about 100 times better than the radio service. Anyone know what CODEC and bit rate they are using?

Also does anyone know how to get the Windows app to stay set to max stream quality? I have to reset it every time I reopen the app. It does the same using Firefox. The Android phone app stays set to maximum.
