SJ Network casualty list

A running list of humans being shown the door. Kind of like the one RnR has been keeping on the CC downsizings. A few weeks ago it was Al Winter, long time Miami air personality who was cut from Love 94. Now it's KKSF and KYOT making cuts.

here's the latest from RnR

BA SJ Network Proliferates In Major Markets
Dec. 04, 2006
By Carol Archer

Two major-market veteran air talents -- Clear Channel KKSF/San Francisco afternoon drive personality Ray White and Clear Channel KYOT/Phoenix morning host Cliff Smith -- have exited. BA's new Smooth Jazz Network replaces them both.

KKSF/San Francisco dismissed veteran smooth jazz personality Ray White last Friday, Nov. 24; evening personality Timothy Alexander White (no relation) was also shown the door. KKSF PD Ken Jones told R&R that afternoon drive and evening dayparts are now be covered by Broadcast Architecture's new Smooth Jazz Network, thus Dave Koz replaces White; Annie Ashe takes evenings.

It's always been a business. If you want success you have to invest in the business. Good thing these bean counters aren't making chilli, there wouldn't be any beef in it!

Really! Have you ever taken the spark plug wires off to see how few plugs the motor will run with? A V-8 will actually run with just 3 or 4 plugs firing but you wouldn't want to drive it! These guys just keep chipping away at a station till there's nothing left.

Entercom KSSJ/Sacramento brings on Dave Koz in afternoons, who displaces Doug Thomas.

[EDIT]

1/8

Broadcast Architecture's new Smooth Jazz Network adds two affiliates: Entercom KSSJ/Sacramento, where Ramsey Lewis' morning show replaces Doug Thomas; and Dave Koz bows in afternoon drive on Wilks KJZS/Reno, Nev., displacing PD/air talent Robert Dees.

Oh and, WNUA will be running the network's Kenny G shift on midday Saturday.

Well, theres not much you can do when a steamroller comes at you is there?

Add a few more...the Smooth Jazz 106.5 Dayton weekenders are finally gone. The whole full time staff got blown out in early December (Bob Sweeney mornings, Skip Porter middays, Butch Brown afternoons, Ryan Phillips nights and Robert Loague overnights). All replaced by the SJ Network. The weekenders held on until they all did their last shows last weekend. Which means 35 year Dayton radio vet Clay Collins is blown out with his excellent Sunday Jazz Brunch show which featured traditional jazz that ran from 10a.m. to 3p.m. He's being replaced by---Kenny G!! The other weekenders were Jerry Francis Saturday mornings, Phillips on Sat. midday...Mike Island Sat. afternoons. Sunday had a DJ named Kathy in mornings, Clay on midday and jockless afternoons. The Chris Botti, Lewis and Koz weekend shows stay of course. So absolutley NO local jocks on the station...day, night or weekends. I know...doesn't make a difference...saves money, like I posted a looong time ago...people who got degrees and experience in radio are out, those who didn't go to school for broadcasting but have talent in other entertainment fields have invaded DJs space. Guess you can now try and be actors or musicians to keep working. Thank your parents at least for helping you get through college to try and live your dream in the radio business.

WJJZ Philadelphia

Well, here in Philadelphia, we only have the Dave Koz shift from the network. On weekends, we have the Dave Koz show, and also Legends of Jazz, but those are just some 2 hour shows. Other than that, we have either local live jocks or local voice tracks. The current smooth jazz station is still only 2 months old though, because our old smooth jazz station was blown up in August.

The old WJJZ, on 106.1, had Loni Taylor in the evenings. I know she is not from the BA network, but where was she from? I've noticed mention of her on many other smooth jazz stations.

Loni Taylor or Becky Taylor? Becky Taylor was v/t ing at WJJZ, she is based in Denver, works at the SJ station there, and voicetracks for a number of Clear Channel SJ stations that are BA Clients but she is not voicing on SJ Network. Loni Taylor does Jones Radio Network's early evening shift,6-10p. She used to be on WNUA and some other SJ stations. Jones is also based in Denver, their jocks VT though so I'm not sure where she is based.

Another set of casualties the staff at the SJ station in Ft. Meyers FL, which blew out all their local jocks except Randi Bachman who went from PM Drive to middays to make way for Koz in PM drive.

KYOT Phoenix now has Dav Koz M-F 3pm-7pm, Madison Taylor (usually goes by just Madison on the air)M-F 7pm-12mid and Becky Taylor (who was midday and then 7pm-12mid) is now shown as weekends. Tony Evans moved from 3pm-7pm to Cliff Smith's chair on morning drive (5am-10am) and Angie Handa is filling in the midday slot.

Al Winters

Al Winters is back on the air at WJJZ Philadelphia. He previously worked in Miami, where he was replaced by the network. He is now live every weekday and Saturday. I think he does a very nice job, and it is enjoyable to hear him... and we actually get to hear somebody announce the songs more often than 3 times an hour.
