Skimmer - Scott/KLZ

At my old station we accessed our airchecks using KLZ. My new station is using what appears to be the exact same equipment but I was told it's not possible.

Ward Beck board (I believe. I'm not in the studio right now, but if I'm wrong I will edit this post)

Scott Studios

KLZ

Basically, the skimmer would start recording whenever the mic button was pushed. It would then leave an easy to navigate list with time, length of break etc.

The same program would also record everything the station played, and we also had it set up so it would record a few other stations in our market so we could hear what they were doing.

I don't see why we wouldn't be able to do this. We are using an identical console, and the same version of Scott Studios. We may be using a different version of KLZ. I don't know because since I'm not a newsie I don't use that program.

For now I have my computer at home set to record my show every morning off my satellite dish, but that means I spend more time searching for my breaks than I do airchecking myself.

Any ideas?

There could be allot of reasons that option is not available to you, to use the skimming functions you need a separate I/O card for the contact closures and I think an open recording slot. So if they don't have that card or are already using all the recording slots then it would take more money to add the additional functionality.

At my old place we had a bunch of people who could access this. 3 newsroom computers, 2 PDs and our producer. I assume they were all pulling it off of the network. WOuld all of the computers need seperate cards etc, or just one. Sorry, I don't know much about networks.

You should take this up with your PD/Engineer/Station Manager. We can't tell you why.

I have a Skimmer, but I could only afford to do 24 hour skimming... No relay card and no mic skims. Every facility is different and everyone has a different opinion about who should have access to it. Only 2 people can get into my Skimmer.

We don't have an enginner. A few times a year we get an engineer up here to deal with problems that come up between his visits. When he came here last time, I asked him about this and he said "I don't think you guys are set up for this". He had a million other things to do so he didn't look into this, nor dis I expect him to.

I've been at this station for a few months. I'm am hosting the morning show, and other than on commercials, since I don't voice-track, I've never heard myself on the air. What I would love is to be able to rip all my breaks onto a flash drive every day and listen to them in my car on the way home.

Am I getting lost in the mix? How is my breathing, does it sound bad with all the processing? Am I using the same phrases over and over? etc etc etc. These are thing I need to know, or I will be stuck in a small market forever.

Set up an off air receiver connected to your favorite recording device. Press record/pause and then remember to start and stop it for your breaks. Problem solved.

Yep... Do that. If you are trying to better yourself and only have a contract engineer, this is definitely the way to go.
