Turned it on at midnight thirty to hear back to back Sinatra. Then the ID for Philly's New..........

Martini Lounge Radio @ 1340 AM

And they're celebrating September with Sinatra. 24/7 Frank. Didn't this format fail in a couple markets? If its a stunt, good one, sure to please those mourning WPEN. I also thought the stunt into Skin Radio was cool (the best of the 1800's, 1900's and now).

regardless

Well, first off, the server must be set on Central time, as you say you heard this at 12:30am and the post was made at 11:57pm..

Assuming the server time IS an hour off... Im listening at 1:06pm eastern and I don't hear any sort of Matin Lounge or all Sinatra format.

Yes, the server must be jacked, as it is now 1:11 with Sinatra OVER THE AIR.

Now for the update-

1:00 am-recorded message from Al Clay announcing the new format- martini oldies (sinatra) and martini newbies (buble), similar to that [email protected]ever format that went on (and off) somewhere (northeast somewhere, i believe). Skin Radio, he said, WILL continue on at skinradio.com and skinradio.com only. He also gave a website

http://martiniloungeradio.com/

for comments. I shall leave some negative ones.

Since they are on AM, with the horrible HD audio, they may as well play songs recorded in the 1950's and 60's.

And the people who were alive then, people like myself, actually still listen to AM radio and our hearing range ain't that great anymore. Sounds like a much better fit than alternative rock.

I'd listen to AM for that format. Problem is, who can hear them? How far out of the building can you hear 1340? I'm on the Montco-Berks-Lehigh lines and there's nothing that sounds like radio on 1340. Ever.

I enjoy the standards show on WJJZ, but that's just 1 night a week for just a couple hours.

I was lucky to get to hear Skin Radio on the air when I was in Philly a couple of weeks ago, and even though it was AM, I liked what I heard. I'd flip back and forth between Radio 104.5 and Skin Radio, and always found something I liked. Signal-wise, during the day, I was able to pick them up towards King of Prussia, and always had them clear in Abington.

It's a shame, but was expected with Radio 104.5 signing on. It was only a matter of time.

On a side note... it looks like they're still streaming Alternative at SkinRadio.com. Does anyone know if this will stay?

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Martini Lounge Radio - New Standards Format Debuts on WHAT 1340 AM

Philadelphia – Today, Marconi Broadcasting owned WHAT 1340 AM launched a new Contemporary Standards format. The new station is called Martini Lounge Radio and will feature classic standards from Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Peggy Lee combined with new music from artists like Michael Buble’, Harry Connick Jr and Diana Krall. To celebrate its Grand Opening, Martini Lounge Radio is airing “September With Sinatra” – continuous Frank Sinatra music through Labor Day weekend and beyond.

Marconi Broadcasting President , Tom Kelly comments, “This music has been missing from the Philadelphia radio dial far too long. Across the country, baby boomers, now in their 40’s and 50’s, have shown tremendous interest in this fabulous style of music. We know that Philadelphia has always had an appreciation for the standards, and we are proud to bring them back on Martini Lounge Radio. And I could not imagine a better way to begin than with continuous Frank Sinatra.”

The station’s prior Alternative music format, Skin Radio, will continue exclusively on-line via its live internet stream at http://www.skinradio.com Skin Radio features music from local Philadelphia bands as well as a blend of modern rock, independent and reggae music.

I listened to skin a few days ago. I thought it was getting good.

Yeah, I hate that horrible HD audio. It's too crystal clear and in stereo.

I believe they were referring to the audio we regular people have to contend with - you know, 5 kHz cutoff, fuzz over the audio, those sorts of things that make people tune away from AM in droves now.

Interesting idea. It's too bad that SkinRadio couldn't make it at 1340. Unfortunately, I don't see where this format has any more of a chance of succeeding than the previous format. If the station was on a stronger signal, even if it was a daytimer (like 860), that would be a different story.

With smaller outlets like WHAT in major metropolitan cities, one needs to question if these stations are really viable commercial outlets. If so, fine, but if not, maybe a non-commercial outlet or a college might want to take it over.

It's being reported that Tom Kelly from Skin Radio was on the Radio Racket program saying that the HD is going to go off with the new format. He said that HD is incompatible with the older demo and didn't attract any HD radio buyers with the younger demo, who mostly listened online.

This info is from this post in the HD radio forums.

Sorry to say, but I think this whole station is becoming a money pit for those that bought it. HD radio equipment isn't cheap, it has a poor signal, and now a format (better than Alt Rock) that the older demo in the burbs cannot hear.

Thanks again for posting the info about the interview on the HD Forum Zach, but I just wanted to clarify some of the things you said.

Tom did not say that he's turning off the HD because it is incompatible with the older demo that the new format targets. He said he is turning it off to get better use of the analog signal, i.e. - cover a larger area. He did not say that he was turning it off forever, nor did he say when he would turn it back on.

I just wanted to clear those things up. If you didn't get a chance to hear the show yet, you can listen to the replay all weekend long. I'm sure we'll play it thru at least Monday.
