Skip Is In... BIGTIME!

Just for the record, skip has been in bigtime for the past few days. I spent some time listening to the radio today and to my suprise, skip was coming in from the east... and almost all day long. Anyone else noticed?!? I got nothing from the west. Baton Rouge usually comes in pretty clear at any point of the day, but not today.

I was able to hear:
- 97.5 WABB-FM in Mobile, AL
- Hot 104 Mobile, OVER our 104.1 Halleluja FM (weird)
- TK 101 in Pensacola, FL
- Some unknown station in Dothan, AL (don't remember dial position)
- Island 106 in Panama City, FL.

Wildest thing was when the new Rockin' Country 106.7 went off the air for a bit earlier this evening and I was pickin' up XL106.7 (WXXL) out of Orlando!!!

For you CB and HAM operators, this is great time to do some operating!

note to the NAB..satellite radio..its worth paying for!!</P>

There has got to be something going on in the atmosphere...there is a thread on the Alabama board talking about this same thing. My XM receiver is set for 107.3 which is an empty channel in Montgomery, AL. I could pick up two stations, one from Pensacola/Mobile, the other from Columbus Georgia clear as a bell. They were over powering my little XM Roady II to the point I had to switch channels...it was very tough to find one that wasn't producing some type of interference.

Simple Explanation....

National Weather Service is calibrating a new radar system and is releasing metalic dust/particles high up in the atmosphere over south Texas over the next week. NWS had something up the other day on their website about how it can affect TV and FM reception during the testing.

Not that simple of an explanation. It has a little more to do with the atmosphere that just releasing metallic particles in the air. If that was the reason, it would not explain how I was able to key up ham repeaters in Natchez,MS and Atlanta, GA Wednesday morning. Was also having fun talking on a TN repeater Thursday morning. I could bore you with all kinds of info. on propagation and the likes...but that's for another board.
Didn't notice much of it this morning, but then again, I wasn't really looking for it like I was the other two days. Enjoy it while it lasts.

The WABB in Mobile and a few other stations are normal tropo ducting (like 107.3 from Pensacola, and unfortuneately WYNK still covers TK 101 from Florida), but sounds like great Tropo ducting..

If you want a forcast of when it's likely to happen by day go here:

WBLX 92.9 Mobile was blasting into Lafayette like a local at 5:15 this afternoon. I could also pick up WYCL 107.3 and WABB although KMDL 97.3 was giving it hell. Baton Rouge had a lock on 100.7 and 101.5. Too bad. TK101 is a great station and would like to hear it again.

Re: Simple Explanation....

The NWS advisory explained that it may cause some signals on TV and Radio to be carried farther than normal while other may be degraded by multipath. The stuff released is called "chaff".
