Skip Spence

Sorry to report the passing of Skip Spence Thursday. Skip was a regular fixture on WSRX at Naples Florida before the station was sold. Skip used various names while disc jockeying up and down the dial. He was heard as Skipper Tee, Johnny Dark, The Skip and more. It's hard to say how many places Skip worked during his lifetime. He also counseled many people with his own personal testimonies and counseled prisoners at a facility outside St Lewis while also a DJ. No burial plans have been announced. . .

I heard about Skip's passing today while catching up with a mutual friend. I worked with Skip in Indiana about 15 years ago. He worked all over the place. Perhaps his highest profile job was as a jock on the Christian network WAY-FM, but he also worked in El Paso and Nashville.

Skip was raised in Southern Indiana and lived there off and on throughout his life. That is where he and I crossed paths. One thing I doubt many knew about Skip Spence was his love of soccer. He spent a lot of time as a soccer coach and referee in the collegiate levels. Certainly he was less shy about sharing his Christian faith.

Skip graduated from divinity school, and paid his way by working as a night jock at WTRB in Washington, Indiana. When I worked with him, he was helping others leverage the Local Community Radio Act and helped launch several LPFMs. He later tried his hand at ownership, taking over a small AM station in Tennessee as an LMA operator.

Skip was a long time member here under the handle "skipperthomas". He shared some of his own bio on ReelRadio: REELRADIO - The Skipper T. Spence Collection!
