SKY PILOT on WZLX today

I was a bit taken aback by Carter Alan's sexist comment about Mariah Carey on the cover of Rolling Stone today (with her "2 friends", please, Carter - she's not even aired on that station!) - but it was pleasant to hear the complete,
unedited, PSYCHEDELIC long version of SKY PILOT by THE ANIMALS, which was one of the best songs played last year on Oldies 103's Esplanade concerts.

There are plenty of SKY PILOT type songs WZLX could add into the mix.

Keep it up! Note to new Program Director!

its classic rock. its mariah carey (who always shows her "friends" off). it isnt sexist...it is what rolling stone and mariah was aiming for.

Perhaps being the Music Director and the Assistant Program Director may allow Carter to take an occasional musical liberty during his mid-day shift.

Also on a Sunday evening a couple of weeks ago they played the entire unedited thirteen minute album version of "Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers. I hadn't heard that entire version on commercial radio in many decades.

There are at least two or three edited versions of different lengths that are usually played instead. In addition to the short 1968 Top 40 single version, there are edited medium-length versions of the album version that I've usually heard.

> Keep it up! Note to new Program Director!

I hope it wasn't just a "while the cat's away, the DJ's will play" situation while the station was in between program directors...

Oh fercryinoutloud. Lighten up.

Actually, "Sky Pilot" is a great song!

I can't understand why it hasn't gotten much recent airplay, especially since I thought it was one of Eric Burdon And The Animals' bigger hits.

Actually, Nicholas, I was thinking about the FM hits that were around
before you were born. Us old people are in touch with all the hip trends
new and used! :)

"I'm The Light" by Blue Cheer, "Fresh Air" by Quicksilver Messenger Service,
"Sunny" by The Electric Flag with that great Buddy Miles vocal on a classic
hit (By the way, Bobby Hebb had 4 hits if you include the Grammy winning
"A Natural Man" that he wrote for Lou Rawls), the long version of "Ride
Captain Ride" by Blues Image (a very collectible band on eBay), or even
"In A Gadda Da Vida" from the live IRON BUTTERFLY album

this stuff makes Classic Hits radio rock. There were tons of "FM" tunes
- The Guess Who from their terrific live album from Seattle - doing it
before Nirvana was even a thought! The Guess Who got quite a bit of FM
airtime outside of their hits, and veered off into Velvet Underground
territory at times.

Speaking of which, hearing the original "Sweet Jane" once a year on
WZLX is ridiculous - it should be in rotation - and not the Rock & Roll
Animal version.

I know, that's what I meant by being the Music Director...

Eric Burdon and the Animals had many other hits besides "Sky Pilot", some of which are still played on Oldies and Classic Rock stations. Songs like that aren't necessarily one hit wonders. It's that for one reason or another they unfortunately became "dated" or didn't "test well" with the mainstream listenership.

"Sky Pilot" is a great song and was a #14 national Billboard hit in summer '68, but it's an intense anti-war song of the Vietnam era, not really a "good time oldie" that todays mainstream listener will sing along to or tap their foot to while at work.

I used to play it fairly often on my psychedelic 60's show on non-commercial WMBR and I always got positive calls on it (and I interviewed Burdon as well), but that was a specialty show on a non-commercial station listened to by a cult following of my fellow leftover 60's hippies and obscure music afficionados, not the mainstream audience for music of that era who were tuned to WZLX, WODS or WROR.

My non-commercial show was based on that "FM underground radio" era album rock and it was often the top rated show on WMBR, but that amount of people listening to a college station wouldn't be even a grain of sand by commercial radio standards. Unfortunately, playing a lot of that stuff on commercial Classic Rock stations nowadays always makes them lose ratings among todays mainstream listeners.

I never knew there WAS a long version of that. You're not thinking of "I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home" by Grand Funk Railroad are you?

I heard ZLX play the 18-minute studio version last year.

sick! yeah, the version you usually hear was 4-5 minutes. The original single was about 3 minutes...

... curious.. does Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" get any play? Agreed about the longer version of "Ride Captain Ride" with the guitar solo at the end. I remember hearing that on FM radio.

Very rarely anymore on Classic Rock stations, and if so, it would usually be as some sort of specialty feature. I used to play it, often by request, on my non-commercial radio 60's show.

Hey Joe,

With all your complaints about being underserved musically then I am shocked you don't follow the latest "hip trend"...

Go listen to your crappy selections on an iPod!

While I agree that these songs can't fly on commercial radio these days, I'm wondering, do you actually know these songs that you're calling "crappy"?

Of course it's all a matter of taste, and you have the right to like or dislike whatever you want, I just wonder if you're familiar with them before you condemn them. At least a couple of the songs he mentions below are great songs, in my opinion.

Probably falls into the same category as "Hot Smoke and Sassafras" by The Bubble Puppy.....

I used to play that one too. WMBR has the CD reissue of the original album.

Yes, FCC Fight! That's right! If Carter went out on a limb and defended
Mariah Carey for exposing herself that would be one thing.

Crude sophomoric humor regarding the female anatomy is better fit for
Animal House. It's inappropriate and silly. Just because one has
a First Ammendment right doesn't mean one has to abuse that right.

It wasn't objectionable - it was just plain dumb. We expect more
from Carter Alan than these "DePetro moments".

Yes, but it's a commercial "Classic Rock" station. Today's "Classic Rock" stations are aimed at a mostly male audience who are still vicariously reliving their adolesence rockin' out to Led Zep while now in their 30's and 40's (as opposed to "Classic Hits" and "Oldies" stations which go for a male/female mix).

Most "Classic Rock" stations in other markets actually have a lot more sex-ploitation both on the air and on their websites than WZLX. Look at websites for "Classic Rock" stations in many other markets and you'll often see stuff like "Babe Of The Day" bikini pictures and such. At least 'ZLX spares us that.

I'm not condoning this stuff, just illustrating that it's typical for that format nowadays. K&M in the morning get more crude than I've heard on 'ZLX before. In some other markets, "Classic Rock" stations were the Howard affiliates, and he certainly illustrated how well sex sells to that demo.

This is no longer the late 60's when the story was that feminists once came to WBCN's office and dumped a box of live baby chickens on the front desk just to protest a DJ who called women "chicks".
