Skype calls on talk radio

I'm hearing more Skype calls on talk radio lately and they sound terrible.

I don't think the problem is Skype's audio quality (the only problem I know of with Skype is dropouts when there isn't enough bandwidth) but the callers sound like they're in a barrel. They must be using their laptop's built in mic.

I'm sure call screeners tell callers to get off the speaker phone before they go on the air -- why put up with this?

The computer expert who calls Jon Greyson once a week uses Skype-in-a-Barrel -- she should know better! I just heard a Skype interview on Bloomberg Radio that was equally bad.

Cell phones are bad enough but at least they sound like normal phones. These Skype calls are really disturbing.

It may not be Skype. It may be speaker phones, including cell phones on speaker.

I've heard these calls on Marketplace. I even emailed them at one point and they said the guests insist and I guess the producers want the guest so badly they put up with it.

Shows how far radio has fallen when people seeking publicity or attention don't care if they get on the radio or not and make such demands - and don't care how they sound.

I have been on Skype calls before where both myself and the other person were using broadcast quality microphones (EV RE20 / EV RE27 / Shure SM7B) and the audio was broadcast quality. So yeah I agree, bad sounding Skype calls are likely due to something other than Skype itself.

Bob: just think of the thousands a day who use blogtalkradio....they dont care about quality and it shows.

PS blogtalk is very poor quality for a reason they don't pay royalties........ and they dont offer a higher quality even if you offer to pay more.

I've done that too and I thought it sounded fine. Broadcast quality? Well, maybe by today's standards ;) -- but in any case, it's pretty damn good.

I guess callers have to be told to go get a decent headset with mic ... or find the computer's mic and lean into it!

Wadio, you still haven't said why you're so sure those calls were on Skype.

I've heard shows where the guest or the host mentioned the call being on Skype.

To use it for on air audio, you need to make sure you have a rock solid connection.

When everyone says "broadcast quality", does that mean FM or AM?
