SL 100 Changes?

I was working in Dyersburg today and heard WASL SL 100 for a good amount of time today for the first time in a while and noticed that they seem to have gone more rock and changed their slogan to Real Rock Variety. When did this take effect? I'll admit I haven't listened as much recently.

Also, how close is the new country station on 97.3 that is owned by Burks Broadcasting to coming on? Thanks! ;D
 
With Memphis nearby and Rock 92 in Jackson, I wonder if this would be the case.

It seems that all the JB&B stations I've heard are on a rock format, but from a distance, the Hot AC format seemed to work in D-burg.

WTNV 97.3 went on the air on Thursday June 28th. I really didn't know it until Monday when SL 100 was announcing that WTNV would now carry Dyersburg High School sports, and it is no longer on Froggy 94.3.
 
I had thought that WTNV might carry Lake County sports. Glad they've mended the fences with DHS though

New or old format...The guy I've heard on the couple of times I turned it on after seeing this post- is a puker, and he's not that good at it. I don't know what kind of changes they're going through there, but I know that Roger Vestal was there. Although he and I don't really know each other, we've known OF each other for a very long time.
I was part of the WZDQ "HitRadio Q-102" regime and he was at WYNU "The New 92 FM" in Jackson many years ago. (How long DID that stay "new?")
(When a little 3,000 watt station consistantly kicked some 100,000 watt bootie!)
Roger at least knows what sounds good. Is he still there?
We had some words about John-Boy and Billy a while back that he was in on.
There was a girl doing middays pretty well.
Have they been moved to other stations in the little group?
Is Maxey still involved?

I've only listened a couple of times out of curiosity after seeing this post.
I don't know who the guy I've heard is, but I think he ISN'T Roger.
Roger sounded better than that in the mid 80's.

I was in the Dyersburg area last week, but failed to turn on SL-100...I just noticed on their website that it lists Roger as GM/Afternoons.

Out of curiousity...was this other jock just stiff or what?

according to their website, Vestal is doing an afternoon airshift...3-7 or 4-7 or some such. Maxey has officially retired.....but not before he cut a deal with Burks for his daughter to become Sales Manager. I think WTNV is Country....they have no website yet that I could find.

Meep, have you heard anything lately about Don Pairs, I know I haven't heard him on the air.

Don is doing fairly well.
I see him at least once a week.
Mobility not great...words still slurring some...but he's resting and taking it easy.
He is retired and so is Anne.

That's where a guy tries so hard to do his "radio voice" that it sounds ridiculous?
That's what this guy does. They used to have a guy on mornings there that did it so badly that the general public made jokes to ME about him. He was the one on before the JB&B thing hit.
The best thing they have going is Paul Harvey.
I hope they havn't screwed up THAT contract.
 
Of Course WTNV Eagle 97 is country... Roger was the GM at Clear Channel when they sold out to Forever... so Roger took the Eagle with him... does anybody remember Eagle 104 WTNV?... I haven't heard the format, but if it's the one that Roger told me he was going to use, it should be pretty good... regardless of "pukers"... Good Luck Roger.. hope all is going well.. wish I lived close enough to listen.

You have to remember though that this is small West Tenn Radio...a lot of on-air jocks are just out of college or folks that haven't had a lot of great training.

I've never worked at a station (and I'm out of the business) where a PD would air-check my show and constructively critic my on-air ability. I mean, I would air-check myself and listen to try and improve my performance or I would listen to large market air-checks to hear their delivery, but very rarely did I get any feedback.

There are people that love to do radio and there are people who see it as a job. I would show prep an hour at night and then another hour before I went on-air. Conversely, I have seen morning-show hosts show up 2 minutes before they go on-air.

My favorite line from a PD, "Just read the liner cards."

I wish there were more progressive stations that nutured talent and tried to stay ahead of the curve.

Man, I started in SMALL TOWN West Tennessee radio.
And, I've been in enough PD "Aircheck" sessions (on both sides of the desk) to choke a horse.
Big station or small, just talk like a person and avoid the "Ronnie Radio" persona.
One of my favorite PD's is now the PD for one of the largest market county stations in the country.
He was tough in an aircheck session-but he made me a lot better at what I did.
And it's mostly common sense.

Yeah, but (and no offense ;D)...how long ago was this? I just don't see it as a common practice anymore.

Like with anything, when you first start out, you're feeling your way around until you finally "get it". The best advice I ever got was "talk like there's someone sitting across from you..."

The funny thing is...to this day (in my current employment situation)...there are no employee evaluations. Feedback, both positive & constructive criticism, can only improve the product.

I think the best advice I got was 'make sure you have a smile on your face when you talk because that smile can be heard on the radio'. It sounded silly, but it's true.
 
That was not THAT long ago, smartypants.
I got better at radio AFTER I had been in it for years.
The things that made me better would have been just as effective years before if someone had taught them to me. If someone had taught me those things when I was 20 I could have sounded as good as I did when I learned them.
Relax.
Use your own voice (you DO NOT have to sound like "Ronnie Radio")
Smile (like little said)
Rather than someone "sitting across from me", I chose to imagine someone sitting beside me as I drove or rode in the car.
Keep it local (difficult today)-if it's raining outside-bring it up! If traffic sucked on the wya to work-mention it.
That sort of thing.
Listen to Gregg Rivers.
He does live, local, and relatable very well.
Even during the sign-offs where I've heard him refer to thanking the Good Lord for another day on His green earth. May seem corny to us-but listeners LOVE that stuff. However-it must be sincere.You can tell it is with him.
Don't "copy" anyone-but just listen to the things he talks about.
(Only do it a little less, maybe-hahaha!) ;D
