SL-100

Well Meep,

the funny thing is, I'm going to be teaching "Media Concepts" which is basiclly the intro to Radio, television, and anything else you can fit in there... so I will never be fully "out" of radio.

but I came to the same conclusion that you did, just earlier... I really do hope it comes back around. I'll be able to retire from the school system in my Early 50's and maybe by then I can go have fun in radio again... (and hopefully do it right)

I understand that your jokes didn't make it through... but that's ok.

I'm planning on starting an internet radio station (gasp... oh no... the doom of us all), and then working it into an actual broadcast run by high school students... sounds ambitious... but also fun.

glad you're having som fun in radio again...

one last thing... thanks for keeping me "real" ha ha

J-Rod...where are you teaching?

Is it around Jackson or somewhere in the outer lying areas?

Has anyone heard any recent news from WASL/WTNV/WTRO? I talked breifly with a former salesperson recently and was told that Maxey's daughter (Amy I think) is not sales manager up there anymore. Any gossip coming from the big "D-burg"?

Wondering about that myself. My sister knew Amy back in the day, but has not spoken to her in years! I think I met Amy once myself, through my sister, of course! 8) ;D

I like Roger...but he has to get some personality on-air. He is extremely dry and cookie cutter. In contrast, Gregg Rivers plays a similar format and has a lot of energy and seems to have a lot of good interaction with listeners.

Pep up Roger!

Burks Broadcsting is supposed to be moving into a new location that will also house the Burks Beverages operation. That building was supposed to be ready for occupancy (at least for the beverage plant) this summer. How's that coming along?

Well, I learned two things today...I didn't know of the new building plans and I didn't know their current building is leased from Ham Parks...interesting.

I couldn't find anything new...but here is the article from Dec ' 07 about the move.

Here's a true story about ther building they are in now. Immediately upon moving in, you would always smell a foul odor around the water fountain. After extensive investigation as to the source of the odor, it was discovered that a P-trap had been omitted from somewhere along the plumbing system. When the plumbing problem was corrected, the foul smell went away. That was probably more than you really wanted to know.

i'm very sleepy.

Yeah, I worked at old 100 point one FM back in the 80's for a little while. What ever happed to my old buddy Steve Guttersmell and Charles Maxiehead? Had a lot of good drinking with those guys. And there was Earl the squirrel who moved to Memphis I think.

T

Maxie retired (finally) and is home caring for his "piece." Someone said his daughter is there still.
Guttery left when they hired Roger Vestal as OM or GM or whatever (and he didn't get it)
Earl is at that jazz fm in Memphis. I forget what name he uses.

Steve Guttery works for the Chamber of Commerce in D-burg. I think it's the second job he's ever had.......WASL/WTRO was his first.

Why wouldn't Burk give that job to Guttery?
Someone's been trying to say they're paying 100G+ for that job now.
I had to laugh.
I would guess they bill less than 60,000 a month-but I dunno.
Either way...can't see it supporting a 100k+ salary for an OM even if he DOES pull a board shift.

To give everyone an update. I'm the General Manager, Natalie Burks is the Director of Sales & Marketing, Brian Thomas is the Ops Mgr, The Legendary Tom Hunt is the PD of WTRO and Dan Defillipo is the PD of Eagle 97.3

Amy Maxey, the former DOS, is now selling for a medical supply company and Maxey spends his days golfing. (He will be back in the fall as the voice of the Dyer County Choctaws)

Hey Roger, how's the new building coming along? You guys gonna be able to move anytime soon? By the way, where is it located?

Re: Tony Greene SL-100 severe weather guy

Does anybody remember Tony Greene that worked for WASL/WTRO in Dyersburg? He is the guy that did a great job with the severe weather and I was told he went to KCRV radio but when you call them they do say much. Dyersburg needs him back on all severe weather as he is out in the storm with a play-by-play as to what is happening.quote author=Meepster link=topic=88495.msg667973#msg667973 date=1198295676]

Well, Blow me down!

Mr. Vestal...

I listened for the first time today to SL-100 for a while. I was driving the wife's mini-van to pick up stuff that wouldn't fit in the Jeep. It was on SL-100, but with the music that was playing I didn't notice it wasn't 92.3.
(Where the Jeep radio usually sits when not IPOD'ing)

Suddenly, some spots or whatever and....Paul Harvey! I have always LOVED Paul Harvey from back in the WRJB-Super 98 days. I got me some good tunes, nearly half an hour of Paul Harvey, and got to where I was going.

Later, I listened some more and liked mostly every song I heard. Later in the day there was an older sounding guy on. I was in and out of the van and never caught who he was. A girl was on midday and she seemed to do well. The older guy sounded a little Charles Maxey-like.

I haven't heard SL-100 in quite some time before today, not since they started "The Big Show."
But, the music I heard today was just fine. I guess I'll give it a pre-set, and maybe give it a little bit of 92's time when doing the radio (around 11:30 anyway).

I don't hesitate to opine when I don't like something I hear, so I thought I'd mention this on the board, because I DID like something I heard.
