In the "More CBS" thread there's a report he was shown the door yesterday.

I should have saw this coming once Connie Cole was dropped, but what's up CBS Seattle?

It seems like you people know the price of everything and the value of NOTHING. And out of all the radio conglomerates in Seattle, I gave you the benefit of a doubt. Mostly because of Steve Slaton.

Steve Slaton took a station that was once a JOKE in Seattle radio and made KZOK a classic rock FORCE to reckon with nationally. No one else could have done this with such panache and without him, 102.5 would be another 100.7 or 96.5, just a wheel of revolving and mediocre flavor of the year formats. Through the '90s and up to today, Steve Slaton has made KZOK a top leader nationally in radio.

And you thank him with THIS?

I don't know who's calling these shots, but I would fire HIM/HER FIRST before I would EVER fire Steve Slaton. These firings of legendary talent doesn't help the bottom line now and they will prove DISASTEROUS later on. Radio needs LEADERS now and CBS, you are firing everybody with those desperately needed credentials now.

How is radio ever going to reach this big new gilded age of technology and innovation when you keep ripping the soul out of it? To keep the shareholders happy for NOW? Here's a brand new thought: What if the shareholders decide to dump all their stock in overhyped and underperforming radio industries and go straight back to non-radio commodities?

Because that's what they've been doing now. It's the simplest rule: invest in products where there is the strongest demand. There hasn't been much demand for radio lately (and you can't blame that entirely on the iPod, the internet or the marketplace in general.) And instead of looking to people like Steve Slaton and John Mack Flanagan for vision, seasoned guidance and knowledge, knowledge that is time tested and listener loved for decades, you dispose of them like a two week old intern on crack.

I don't want to hear any excuses. There are NONE for this. It is simply an outrage.

Steve Slaton did not deserve this, nor did the other legendary jocks that were once a part of one of the greatest stables of radio talent, ones who were once PROUD to be a part of the (once) respected name of CBS.

Shame on you CBS.

If it's any consolation, the Oregon Media Insiders blog is reporting that all layoffs were handed down from corporate mandate (thanks NYC, you really know how to run a radio world into the ground...) and the local management had no say in things.

In Portland this meant 1/3 of the Rick Emerson Show gone (apparently popular despite AM 970's 12+ ranking) and Marconi (remember him? lol) gone with his sidekick moved to night shift.

This is just terrible news. I remember the day I first learned Slatons name on the radio, it was the day John Lennon was shot and killed. I listened to his show in my bedroom that night, his commentary and the callers he let on the air between the Beatles records he played that night. I became a regular listener to him and KISW after that.

While Steve did not go to KXRX when almost all other KISW personalities did, I still checked in and listened to Steve on KISW even though most of my other listening time was at 96.5.

When times changed and he landed at KZOK, followed by some of the other well known rock jocks, KZOK was poised to be the next KXRX for a time and even though that seemed short lived, Slaton's show continued loyally as it always had. Steve Slaton was a friend on the radio to me for a long time and he will be missed.

All my best to Steve Slaton and hope you will be back on the air very soon.

the big wigs at CBS NY are going down the line & cutting without any thought of how it will affect the product! It's insane! Steve Slaton is an ICON in Seattle & I am shocked, dismayed and oh so disappointed in the state of local radio. It's a damn shame.

On another note, Amy Lynn, who recently took over the evening show on KMPS was let go, too! The afternoon traffic person, Flo, who worked with Tony Thomas for about 10 years was also shown the door! She bolstered their ratings & she's gone. Yet they keep the midday person? I don't get it. I just don't get it.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but it bears repeating:

Steve is a class act. I emailed him last night and 30 minutes later, he responded with a personal message. I also emailed Curelop, but he didn't respond. Not that he had anything to do with the firing, but I wanted him to know how I felt (feel). Who's Curelop's boss?

Man oh man...I'm with PSAIRCHECKS. I grew up listening to Slayton and the team at KISW... I worked for the Burien Fred Meyer and I would bring my boom box into the store at closing and crank up KISW as we closed. ( I worked in the lumber area). heck...even if I was out on the fork lift the radio came out and KISW was on in the afternoon... this was around 85-91.

I used to tape Metal Shop all the time...little would I know back then that a career in radio was in my future. 20+ years in the biz...and I can tell you that the jocks...especially Steve were a HUGE influence on me...and how I always tried to have FUN on the air.

After hearing that Steve was let loose...I started digging for my favorite Slayton / Roberts moment from KISW. I always liked to play this for my new hires...just shows that there is MORE to radio than "that was...this is". Maybe not "correct" for today's boring VT presentations...but just shows that these guys were having a heck of a good time on air.

I wish I had a copy of Steve on air "locking himself in the studio" and playing the new scorpions over and over and over...I wanna say it was when "Love At First Sting" came out...played the song like 5 times in a row...my memory is not too good.

Hope you enjoy the aircheck...I have one of Steve reading the "mail bag" at KISW during Metal Shop w/ Beau...reading contest entries to win a pair of Vince Neil's jockey shorts...need to edit it up and post it too.

Used to listen to Slaton as well growing up. Great knowledge of music. Switched to THE END in my twenties, but then ventured back to KZOK, KMTT, KJR and sometimes KPLZ or KWJZ these days. FLip to KOMO or KIRO for traffic too and KISW and KJR-AM from time to time. You would call me a P-1 of KZOK. As of today I am a P-4. I like hearing local talent ith music in afternoons KMTT is now my P-1, KPLZ is number two, then KJR and KZOK move back. Mornings will remain on KZOK with a bit of KPLZ and KIRO/KOMO for a traffic hit. I like Country but have to be in the mood. Can do KPLZ or KWJZ, but not WARM or KCMS. Weak feminine side I guess.

I wonder as talent disappears where others are going or if it really makes any difference. KZOK may be surprised. I know for a fact that advertisers want to purchase local radio stations that have local talent. They look for the connection. All things being equal, the station with local talent and promotions wins the buy.

Keep in mind it is HIGHLY unlikely Carey or his boss, Lisa Decker, really had ANY choice in the matter. Almost all these dictates are coming down from New York --- leaving the people here helpless to watch the stations they work so hard to build now start their slide into those "remember when it USED to be a cool station" water cooler moments. I feel as badly for them as I do for the people who are out. In a way the people who are OUT now know their fate...while the people they work with watch round after round of layoffs and STILL have to get the morale boost to show up for work and wonder if their turn is at the end of each shift they do. That can't be easy AT ALL.

Are you guys serious? Steve Slaton was let go from KZOK? I know times are tough, I know no job is secure anymore, I get it and I accept it, but dumping Steve Slaton from KZOK is positively UNFATHOMABLE. They have, what, 30 people on the morning show, but Slaton's salary is keeping them from keeping the lights on? Please. No, clearly this wasn't a local decision, but this IS precisely the reason CBS is not an outfit you want to be working for these days. Since the corporate morons who've driven the once-great name of CBS into the ground ~ long before the current economic calamity got underway ~ don't realize this I'll let them know: when times get tough and you've got to tighten your belt, you circle the wagons AROUND an anchor like Slaton. He's the guy you WANT on your team when things aren't so hot. Carey, Lisa, and anyone else within 100 miles of Seattle could tell you that, but that's what happens when you've only been working in the business for 10 minutes and make your decision with the help of an abacus, or beans to count.

Steve Slaton: you're the man and the classest of class acts, and one thing I know you'll do no matter what situation you're in is take the high road.

Local ownership would have never found rationale for turning their backs on Steve.

"Corporate killed the radio star(s)"

???

You know, every time I've pointed out how mega-corporate radio is responsible for the downfall for the whole medium, some lackey of it always rushes up here to tell me it A) Would have happened anyway. B) Radio is still in a better position regardless and/or C) Slam me personally.

It looks like I have a lot of company today. And the lackeys have been AWFULLY quiet. Now I don't want the inexcusable and unmitigated disaster of the CBS firings of Steve Slaton and many other good and decent hard working people, both on and off the air, to actually STOP these lackeys from justifying their whole scam, even if they've all suddenly found themselves in a painful MINORITY.

So c'mon all you corporate suck-ups. Tell us more about radio's golden future of opportunity under mega-corporate control and please, whatever you do, keep that sunny optimism as you are handed your OWN Christmas pink slips......

I can't seem to find anything about this via Google. Slaton is still on the KZOK website.

Sad stuff. I'm not personally really drawn to air personalities, but I've grown up with guys like Slaton & Crow. Losing them is like losing my childhood.

Also sad when you stumble across the drivetime team on 104.5 the other afternoon. I thought I had actually landed on KNHC or something, but KNHC airstaff sounded a lot better than these two. Bad.

Damn this sucks!

Typical corporate suit behavior, no matter the type of business it is. Can the well liked, dependable, long time employees that were in integral part of the success of that particular location owned by the corporation.

Then, down the road, when that particular location isn't bringing in the level of revenue it once did, these same suits will be scratching their heads, or more accurately their a$$es, since that's the closest they can get to actually scratch their heads, and wonder why the location is performing so poorly.

Best of luck to Steve.

Mike

This happened too recently for Google to catch up to it. Unless your name is Barack Obama, Britney Spears or Axl Rose (who damn near completely fell off the search engine by minutes before suddenly releasing "Chinese Democracy"), you have to wait a few days.........

Concur.

There will be something once "On Radio" in the Seattle P-I makes the call to the station manager and confirms the details... but of course that won't be until Thursday. And... not like most P-I readers even realize they have a radio column. At least it's superior to the Deseret News' "Radio Dial."
