Slight changes at Eagle/Kicks/Disney

With Citadel coming in to buy Disney Radio, Garry Kinsey is apparently in the process of retiring from the mid-day spot at 106.7 after spending 20+ years in Atlanta radio, including a high-profile gig at WSB-AM back in the day. Garry is a very nice man who was creatively castrated by his PDs many years ago at Kicks and has been doing a very straight-forward show for 15 years at Kicks and Eagle.

There are a lot of early retirement packages being offered. The rumor is that Steve Mitchell, the Eagle PD, was offered a package and he declined. Also, it looks as if Mike Macho, currently doing production/imaging for Eagle, is the front-runner for Johnny Gray's former MD job at Kicks and Eagle.

Probably a nervous time for the folks over there. Makes you wonder how the Nuclear Cockroach of Atlanta Radio, Rhubarb Jones, is going to come out.

Garry is a nice guy! Great to work with and has been looking forward to retirement for a number of years now. I do not know about the packages but I would imagine that he's being taken care of. Congrats to him! Now, if Mike Macho is the frontrunner for the MD job, I'd like to know how you know that? ???

I've got lots of friends there from the old days, surfer. Thats what they tell me.

I always thought Garry Kinsey sounded very good doing middays on Kicks until 2000, but then-PD Dene Hallam didn't share that sentiment. He moved Kinsey first to overnights on Eagle and then to middays on Eagle. I have not cared for Gary Kinsey's midday show on Eagle. I felt he was too reserved sounding.

In response to troone...OK. Appreciate the substantiation. I used to work there so I, too, have many friends there, including Mr. Kinsey, Mr. Macho and others. ;D

As for Mr. Freeman, Garry was probably held back (only my understanding) so that NOBODY on Eagle would EVER EVEN TRY to compete with the Kicks folk. Why ruin the cash cow...if you know what I mean. ::)

From both stations, who would be a likely mid-day candidate? Will they look at another citadel market? Could Kevin Steele or Mark McCain be pressed into service? Would be interesting to see Mark and Steve somewhat paired.

I hope Rhubarb is at Eagle for as long as he wants to be. Dallas and Rubarb in the
morning is a good show. I wish they would advertise it more. They don't talk too
much and they play music. Plus, they sound like they have fun and its something
someone could listen to with kids around. Plus, Rubarb is nice guy as well as Steve Mitchell.

This is true. If there's a morning show in town that gets less buzz than audience share, its Dallas & Rhubarb. Some of that is on them, though. They play it pretty safe and, on any given day, there's a little more giggling than you'd want to hear. Though, in fariness, their audience doesnt want to hear a sidekick out in the street making fun of homeless people or filling the toilet at Home Depot!

Hard to believe that Kicks was looking up at Y106 as the one to beat in the early 90s. For all of the hatred still felt toward Moby over there (and he makes Barnes look like a picnic), he's responsible for a lot of the audience and ad dollars to this day.

Wrong on many counts. Stations are balanced musically period and Y has a contrary to Kicks approach, more laid back, older, less contests, less talk. Noone is held back. A few years ago Y barely had tee shirts and promotion, not so now. They are simply living in their musical niche. If you have friends there you'd probably know that Y got more attention than Kicks for a long time to find their musical position. Seems to be working. Y does great in the upper demos where they are positioned.

BTW, Citadel is not even a discussion. No contact, no interference, not brought up, no influence.

Garry Kinsey's last day is tomorrow 9/22/06. He will sign off for good after a great run. He's looking forward to his free time. Johnny Gray will be leaving on the 29th. Two great people and good friends.

Remember Garry well on WiSBee...Atlanta's Morning Merrygoround...wasn't that the name of the morning show? I'd have to listen on my dad's John Deer tractor radio way down in South Georgia during the daytime. Super good AM receiver. I could hear many of the Atlanta AMs way out beyond their shock wave contours.

Garry is a class act and a survivor through all of the changes in our business the past twenty years or so. I'm glad he was able to finish up a great career with a company that offered good benefits.

Funny. You'd think there is this Citadel Army out there ready to make change where none is needed. If Eagle needed to be something other than what it is...ABC and its local management would have done it by now. Thats how it works in most companies outside of CC. Its too well positioned in a money making combo with KICKS

How many country stations does atlanta need? I think Kicks gets the job done without the
need for Eagle. I would like to see 106.7 do something different, something really radically
different. Perhaps put some change in this boring radio market known as Atlanta! It's a great signal to waste, and waste is whats it's doing. A/C makes perfect sense, after all
B98.5 needs some competition! With the talk of 94.9 changing, it would put some real
strain on WSB fm to open up thier 30 song playlist and do something different. Two country signals in one market is just too much.
