Slightly off-topic, but maybe not

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed these new devices with what look like antennas on some of the streetlight poles on the Berlin Turnpike. It almost looks like a wireless network of some kind. If you look up at the streetlight, they are mounted right next to it.

Update:

I am also seeing these devices on light poles on routes 175 & 99 in Wethersfield, they look like some kind of WiFi devices (as I mentioned before) could this be part of a wireless network that we'll all be able to use to get internet radio and such in the near future?

I guess it's so far off-topic, nobody is responding :)

I actually saw what I think you're talking about when I was down in Greenwich the other day. No idea what they're for.

Could be, but they look more like a wifi hub or something, although the one I looked at today almost looked like a motion detector in combo with it.

A lot of the stuff mounted on light poles/traffic light stanchions is for telemetry or control links. It could be any one of the following:

  • Vehicle Location Tracking for Transit (Buses)
  • Traffic Signal Control Links(timing and sequence for traffic lights)
  • Police/Fire MESH Networking for in car computers (MDT)
  • Telemetry for Utility Measurement

...I don't know if there are "Red Light Cameras" there, but the cameras here in Seattle are linked via wireless.

Much of this stuff is UHF, 900 MHz or microwave (2.4 GHz) data burst transmissions.

If it looks like this:

...it's for traffic light control (remote programming, status, override, etc.)

Nope, it doesn't look like that, I've not seen that kind here (however, I have seen the little black thing towards the left of the antenna in that shot). This stuff seems to be mounted only on regular lighting poles and not on traffic signal poles to the right of the light. I don't have a camera or I'd post a picture of it.

While typing this reply, I decided to search the web a bit, now note I didn't find the exact devices, but I found something that looks similar, and I really hope it's not something about to used as part of a toll-system.

No, it won't be for tolling, there's no immediate plan for that in CT right now, and certainly not off of the interstate highways. The black objects are detectors to pre-empt traffic signals when emergency vehicles are approaching (i.e. fire trucks, ambulances).

Yeah, I knew about the black detectors, some hacker magazine used to publish info on how to build a strobe to flash at the proper speeds and patterns to set those to switch the traffic signals.

BTW: My Car radio is dead these days, how's the pirate radio scene in New Britain these days, I was discussing this topic with my brother this evening and he was surprised to find out that there might have been as many as 4 pirates.

Last time I was in the south end of town, I looked for the 87.9 antenna, and didn't see it, have they quit/moved?
