Slingbox Discontinued, Will Shut Down in 2022

Slingbox Discontinued, Will Shut Down in 2022

FOSTER CITY, Calif.—Slingbox has reached its endpoint, with Sling Media announcing that all Slingbox products and services were discontinued on Nov. 9, and will permanently be taken offline on Nov. 9, 2022.

Sling Media, a subsidiary of Dish, said the decision is being made to “make room for new innovative products so that we can continue to serve our customers in the best way possible.” This will not include any new Slingbox products.

All good things... For several years I used a Slingbox to watch my local channels from my home in the Seattle area while I was at my home on the East Coast. The quality wasn't very good, but it gave me the option to keep an eye on the local TV stations on the Left Coast.

Dish Network’s Sling TV is the latest virtual MVPD to join the roster of preferred streaming TV options for Google Fiber customers.

Google Fiber earlier this year pulled the plug on its own video service and instead began featuring streaming TV options including fuboTV and YouTube TV, which is owned and operated by its parent company. Over the summer it added Philo to the list, and now Sling TV.

“Frankly, it’s been clear for a while now that the best TV is already online. 27% of households have cut the cord completely opting for streaming only, and 78% have a streaming service of some type,” Liz Hsu, director of product strategy at Google Fiber, wrote in a blog post.

Look's like Sling TV is being offered to Google Fiber subcribers.
