sloppy radio

Was listening to WAEI 97.1 today and heard updates from the Blue Hill Fair, tagged with "on Kiss 94.5, the official station of the Blue Hill fair since 1982". Also, first spot out of the EBS-sponsored break was an ad for Home Depot. Not blaming the air talent for either of these miscues, but seriously...was anybody paying attention back at the studio and/or in traffic?

Funny you should mention Home Depot. It's been 2 weeks since I've listened to WVOM 103.9 (nothing personal against the station, just withdrawing from the talk, funny I feel much saner. :) ) Anyway, there is a spot that plays particularly during Glenn Beck and I used to hear it everyday. The offer on the ad expires something like 10/31/08. I remember the ad from last year. It's the 08 part that makes me laugh.

I hear what you're saying True Grit...but the errors are much more numerous at your old stomping grounds. The sad thing is that much of the sloppy board work happens during live time. Mostly middays and even the morning show. If I were the PD...I'd be really embarrassed. Nelson (PM drive) is the only one on 106.5 who runs a tight board.

The fact is, 106.5 has never been the same since Bob D. left.

Well, those people you mentioned in your first paragraph are friends of mine, but not having listened since October, I can't comment...other than that they are multi-tasking their asses off, which could account for some of those errors you brought up.

So the people at 106.5 can multicast but the people at 97.1 can't. Talking to friends of mine across the country it seems like every radio person is doing multiple jobs all at once, well the friends of mine that still have jobs. Being asked to do more then one job = sloppy radio. Doesn't matter what station or city.

Both of you make good points. I was just pointing out that it's not just one group...it most groups, as mentioned, that are multi-tasking. I know that radio people are being asked to do more and more...without any extra pay. Too bad...it really hurts the product at the end of the day.

I'm sure the folks at WAEI and 106.5 are paying attention the best they can...but they're only human.

I can't wait to hear your tightness on your three station country network, I'm sure by the time the signal makes it to Columbia Falls and Port Clyde we'll all be impressed.

They'll sound fine, since they'll probably all be satellite/syndicated. Totally devoid of humor, local flavor, and a human touch, but tighter than a bank vault with a busted time lock.

I don't know who "dirtyair" is...but it sounds like he/she assumes that I have something to do with this station network thing in Bangor. Sorry to disappoint him/her...but I'm happy to say that I've been out of broadcasting for over 10 years and I live in southern NH. I used to live in the region back in the 80s and early 90s, and with my current job, I travel to the Bangor area a few times per month. Obviously, I still have an interest in what radio is doing, and I have a few friends who still work in the Bangor market, but I'm glad I'm not playing the game anymore. I wouldn't enjoy it like I used to and I wouldn't be able to make the kind of income that I do now.

I agree with True Grit...the network thing will probably be some run-of-the-mill syndication from Chicago, or Dallas, or Tim Buck Two! More local radio going down the toilet!
