Small Town Version Of Variety Hits

Hey gang I wanted to let you guys in on a little station that is doing VH the right way... It is Q 102 in Lina IL... What started out as a classic hits station a few years ago has turned into something that Jack, Bob or a lot of the other VH stations can't touch... The jocks have a small market sound, but for me it is not the jocks that make the station what it is, but it's the over 3000 song choosing... When they went with their version of VH on July 4th weekend they did their A to Z thing and it took about 14 days to pull it off... They do a lot of local programing ie HS sports, but it is a good listen and they do stream on the web all though it is a low bit stream... Check them out at hitradio.fm and give them a listen... CC

WEAI in Jacsonville, IL has basically had a variety hits format for several years; really its a very broad Hot AC, but its not uncommon to hear some Classic Rock mixed in, and even an occasional 50s/60s track thrown in. The only thing that keeps it from being a true VH station is that they do play the odd current.

Typically a VH station will have 1,000-1,200 songs in rotation. When you go up to 3,000 (like Nine FM in Chicago), you invariably stray outside the area of songs that were Top 40 hits from 1974-present. It can be fun to listen to, but it doesn't fall into what I'd define as the Variety Hits genre.<P ID="signature">______________

Can someone provide a link?

"Check them out at hitradio.fm and give them a listen....."

Tried it but that address doesnt open.

This station does not really count has a Variety Hits station
but it is a really weird and kind of Cool station.
The station is KJDY AM/FM in John Day/Canyon City, OR.
The station plays a mix of Country and Rock
and Roll Oldies from the 50's, 60's and maybe
70's.

It is the only local station that is in the county that
you can pick-up. Grant Co has about 10,000 people in the
entire county and no other station gets there.

Yes, Oregon Public Broadcasting and several religious
stations has transmitters or repeaters there but they
are not programed or ran in Grant Co and sometimes even
Oregon.

Just thought I would share this.

PS: On Sunday afternoon, they run AT40, the CHR version.
I don't understand why they don't seperate the AM and FM
broadcast at this time. Like run AT40 on the FM and run
another program on the AM, or just run there regular
programming, Like country and Rock n' Roll Oldies.
Just weird to me...

I have airchecks of Mike-FM from Medford, Oregon. That is a small market. About 60000 people live in the area.
