But that's 30 years ago. Much has changed since then, and around the time such shifts were really starting to take place all over the map. Contests have their place, but it's also not like Ben is breaking the bank.

Then again....who is breaking the bank like 20 or 30 years ago? Those birthday games-$5 grand one week, $10 grand the next. Sunny's $104,000 giveaway. Actual cars, not just leases. Now, not so much. Maybe the drawing power has lessened.
 
I don't know if nowadays a poor programmed station would save its money by giving prizes. If the station it's ranked good it can be a little plus but I don't think that will make THE difference. 30/ 40 years ago people had one favorite station, today it's a constant zapping between at least 2 or 3 stations.(In my case for example WMMR, WSTW, WRFF and WBEN).
