Smerconish and Giordano on 1210 AM: Thoughts

I really don't like Michael Smerconish and Dom Giordano on 1210 AM because of the way they talk to the callers on the air and other reasons. When those 2 guys are on, my radios are not on WPHT. This is the reason why 1210 AM is and will not be good as the old WCAU-AM and WWDB-FM was in terms of some of their talent. What do you guys think of Smerconish and Giordano?

Smerconish is too in to himself. A lot of hot air and very little substance. He does manage to get a great deal of cable TV news program exposure.

I liked Smerconish when he was on in PM drive. In the mornings? He loves himself too much.

Funny you should mention this, because I listened to Giordano for the first time last night.

He didn't annoy me to the point that I wanted to change the station. In fact, he sounded calm and his topics were thoughtful.

I guess that's what makes him a hack, though.

I like Dom Giordano. His topics are always interesting and he comes across as a real person on the air. Too many talk hosts don't.

Michael Smerconish is good, too, but mornings may not be the best place to utilize his talents.

what do the ratings say?

personally, as a non-listening listener, they seem fine for that station and the current state of talk radio. they promote smerconish a lot during the phillies games; i think they should promote giordano as well, but i never hear anything ...

Giordano goes back to the WWDB days, right? He used to be much more of a libertarian than the Bush conservative he seems to have turned into in more recent years.

They probably promote Smerc a lot during Phils games for the fact that they remind the listener to leave 1210 tuned in for the next morning. Some radios that were on 1210 last night may be turned on the next morning and into Smerconish, and the promos give the listener what to expect.

.......and the promos you get the next morning tell you to turn Smerconish off and go to KYW if you want news and traffic. Nice of 1210 to remind listeners that they aren't served by their talk station.

This is one reason why we miss the old WCAU-AM because the station gave us news/talk/and sports, all on one station, not like it is now with WIP, KYW and 1210 AM. I hear the promos on 1210 during Phillies games saying if you want to talk about tonight's game, tune to WIP.

Speaking as someone who grew up with the later days of full-service WIP, with news updates around the clock, sports, etc., etc., etc., I have no problem with--even prefer to some degree--not hearing the same news and sports headlines I can find anytime I want elsewhere interrupting the reason I tuned in to the station in the first place. I'd rather have an hour of a talk show than the news break.

Sure, a generation ago it made sense because the outlets weren't co-owned and information outlets weren't as readily available as they are now. But times change, and changing with them makes sense.

As for Smirconish in particular, agreed that he is more focused on himself than ever, and that doesn't draw me in (if it does draw in others, great for him). When he does talk issues, I tend to agree with his views more often than not, and most importanly to this listener, he usually treats those who disagree with more respect than most of the other hosts.

As for Dom, I feel as another poster did that he seems to have moved to the hard right, at least when he isn't saying "Joey Vento" in every other sentence.

Smirconish as a commentator is an intellectual lightweight. He is too focused on being on MSNBC and getting his name and face "out there," instead of contemplating anything of consequence or meaning. He seems disingenuous to me.

Giordano was always mediocre, especially for a market the size of Philadelphia. Does anyone remember David Brudnoy on WBZ in Boston? Now, HE was a nighttime talk host!

Given just how mediocre WPHT really is, it's mind boggling that Clear Channel (or Greater Media) don't take an underperforming FM and put talk on it, with Rush as the cume magnet. Guess it makes too much sense.

Why are people on this message board itching so badly for talk on FM? What is the allure to having these shows there in place of music?

This has REALLY been evident over the past several months; particularly since they retooled the format of the morning show to remove news and other typical elements. At this point, he's become very annoying and is pretty much a tune out - which contrasts with my opinion of him a year ago when I tended to listen every day. He now comes off as very egotistical and somewhat obnoxious.

Dom Giordano is okay. His show isn't particularly compelling, but it is not bad either. At times he can actually be pretty good and his topics interesting. Some of his topics are very local to Philadelphia proper and ends up being "inside baseball" to me.

I definitely have to give credit to WPHT for placing local talk on during the evening, which is something that even WABC doesn't do. A locally based Dom G. is much better than tape delayed Laura Ingraham or Hannity, as offered up by talkers in other major markets.

It's been said here in the past that Greater Media could bring talk to FM, given their track record with WTKK in Boston.

With that said, this town needs another general talk station to take on the monopoly that is 1210.

If Greater Media wanted to get into the general-interest news-talk business, it would probably be best served by putting such a station on 950 and moving the sports format to 97.5.

I hate to say this but 1210 needs to let him go and get someone else to do morning drive. Do you agree with that?
