Smerconish To Replace Severin On WTKK?

raccoonradio said:
Why, Wikipedia is very accurate. Here: "The first person to land on the moon was an 11 year old Florida boy who built his own rocket." :) (OK, made that up! :) )

Smerc was criticized by those on the Right for his endorsement of Obama (B. Maloney claiming it was to
appease Jones/Dial Global for syndie rights, etc.) He has since been called "moderate". I haven't heard enough to judge but his voice at least sounds like any number of slightly-raspy-sounding middle-aged-guys-who-do-
fill-ins.
File under "Ex-Severin Headache # 96.9" ...or... "Wipe That Smerc Of Your Face!"

Smerc's bio on the WPHT page lists him as a fill in for Radio Factor...which ended a couple months ago...

No, he's a moderate. There have been a number of subjects where he's taken a pretty moderate or even liberal point of view, while he remains conservative on others. Basically, he's all over the map. Only on MSNBC was he considered "the conservative" and he often had some fun going there and 'surprising' them by voicing an opinion that they didn't quite expect.

He's not 'moderate' just because he endorsed Obama; rather, that's an example of it. By the way, as an aside, if anyone was the moderate in the last election: it was McCain. Smerco endorsed Obama basically because he interviewed better than McCain and because he was of a like mind with Smerco on the issue of Pakistan. I know because I heard the whole exchange on WPHT and Smerco's thought process at the time.

Personally, I don't care for his egotism and his Philly accent/mannerisms. He also has a nasty habit of beating certain pet subjects to death, which I found pretty boring. Also, as an outspoken Iggles and Phillies fan, he'd drive me crazy in boosting both of those teams hard! (GO SOX, GO PATS!)

But I'll admit that once in a while he can be pretty interesting.

By the way, Severin WAS suspended without pay and that has been cited by Taylor on Radio-Info among other trade information sources.

Can you give a citation for the reference? I was under the impression Gr Media was paying him to sit at home....which, of course, is their right.

Raccoon thank you!

A number of trade emails/pubs have made the comment that Severin is losing a lot of money because each day of lost pay on a million dollar contract is a very bad day! However, your citation of the Herald was quite helpful to put this to rest.

I hear a lot of Jeff Katz in Michael Smerconish's delivery. Perhaps it is the Philly accent? However, Jim Braude hails from the same place and I don't hear the same thing from him.

On the pay issue, it wouldn't be the first time the Herald got their facts wrong. Nor would it be the first time that another media outlet created a circle **** (I got bleeped for using that term once before) by picking up on something Lazy Jessica wrote that was not true.

I don't know if he was suspended with or without pay, but based on my experience, when this is all said and done, Severin will not have missed out on any of his contracted pay. (Remember that Imus ended up getting paid and then some when he was dismissed.)

Today his topic was American Idol ::)

How does WTKK expect to gain (or keep from losing) an audience?

I picked him up during the 'Missing Link' segment in the 6pm hour. He sounded tired. Doing 3 shows and talking for 9 hours a day will probably forces you to do fluff topics like American Idol :) Luckily for him, he didn't have to travel far to crawl into bed since he's doing national midday and WTKK shows from his home studio.

Yes who knows, Jessica may have had her info wrong and it just got copied onto other news outlets (though the latest ratings via PPM are not good news for Jay and you wonder if WTKK can re-negotiate that
contract if it keeps up...or can they?)

It wasn't unusual for him to waste entire segments on crap like American Idol on his local Philly show - so I don't think it has to do with him being "forced" to do a fluff topic like AI. He would also blow segments talking with Sal Palantonio, some Philly jerk reporter from ESPN. I remember (with laughter) when they were prognosticating the Iggles' 2007 season game by game. The guy sounded like an SNL parody (like those "da Bears" guys sans the charm) - basically had the Eagles winning almost every game and going 14-2 or something like that. In the end, they actually went 8-8 and came in last in the NFC East! LOL!! :D ;D :D

Smerco blew an entire half-hour on that junk - and he would do it a couple of times a week. So, no shocker that he wasted time on American Idol....that's his show. One has to wonder how long he can keep up that schedule. He'll burn out sooner or later.

Channel 2's BTP reporting that Severin is close to a return under different conditions. Apparently he can't be as harsh in his characterizations and must report to TKK. No more home studio broadcasts. They weren't clear on if he had to take a reduction in pay.
