Smith Hill

I was up on Smith Hill (Utica) the other day. A lot of activity going on on the north side. A lot of cars and trucks in the parking lot. Plenty of construction going on.

Yeah a lot going on. I guess they are still hiring in the news dept & crew. The one thing I know, they will not be H. D. I wish them (WUTR/WFXV)the best luck. I am a graduate of the Roy H. Park School of Television @ WUTR so I have a soft spot for the place. They better hit the ground running and put on an excellent newscast the first day/week or it won't work at all.
I know WKTV gets a lot of criticism but in mho they put on a good newscast. Maybe better than the market deserves.

You sure they won't be HD? That seems like a no-brainer for any operation starting from scratch. It's one thing to convert an entire existing SD plant to HD - that's a big cost to have to justify in a small market like Utica. But if you're building new, the incremental cost of doing it in HD is pretty small, and it would be a heck of a competitive edge to be starting out with.

2nd or 3rd hand information: they are getting used equipment form other Nexstar stations. They have a used live truck. Maybe they are getting the equipment from from WROC. it would make sense that Rochester would have HD before Utica.

That makes sense...though I've seen no indication of WROC going HD, either. But I can certainly imagine Nexstar building a "new" station with used gear.

Well, Monday is the big day for WUTR Eyewitness news in H. D. From what I can tell, they are not going to stream, at least at first. I hope someone local will give us a review. Bob Ross?
BTW, they were Eyewitness News back in the late 70's into the 80's.

Haven't seen the shows for myself... no WUTR or WFXV on cable in Syracuse, and I don't have the proper gear to try to pull 'em in over the air. I have a connection in Utica who promised to put them on DVD for me, but I'm not currently to be out that way again (to pick them up) for another couple weeks.

However, as of this writing, 2 of my readers have posted reviews as comments below the story:

The Utica O-D also ran an article, though it was more of a "fluff" piece than a critical review of the debut. However, it does have a nice photo of the studio set. The station had been careful not to "give away" the set's appearance in the photos it had been posting online in recent days.
