Smooth 87.7

Notice that 87.7 no long is Smooth Jazz 87.7. The play list is more R&B and less jazz. More vocals and less jazz lately. Anyone notice or know why?

You bet I've noticed -- and stopped listening. It's all about targeting younger listeners, whom research has found don't generally relate to instrumental music.

They would be wise to ditch Broadcast Architecture and program the station locally... Alan Kepler is a moron. Don't believe me? Just take a look at the demise of the format under BA's direction. Save the consulting fees, and let Danae Alexander pick the music. Danae IS Chicago.

And did you notice? The latest monthly ratings that came out just this afternoon showed a significant drop in the number of people listening to WLFM. I, for one, was not at all surprised. They've moved from delivering a unique product to one that's all too similar to what's available elsewhere on the dial.

He probably made the fatal mistake of questioning the tactics of Kepler and the other empty suits at Broadcast Architecture. I know of at least one major market SJ PD who "lived in fear" of the BA team on a daily basis. My question was always the same:

"Why? Do you have that little confidence in your own skills?"

I gave them a listen and decided that I do not like the change. This situation may be short lived anyway, as there indications the FCC is preparing to deal with "Franken FM's" in the relatively near future.

Maybe....after the "Franken FM" is dealt with by the FCC...the Smooth Jazz format will end up on another station...say....hmmmm...101.1 FM .

It'll never happen. As smooth jazz listeners age, fewer and fewer of them remain in the target group favored by most advertisers. And we all know that commercial broadcasting today is no longer in the public interest, but rather in the interest almost exclusively of advertisers and stockholders. Such has been the perhaps-unintended outcome of deregulation.

First "older people's" format Adult Standards bit the dust.

Now its Smooth Jazz.

Corporations think these formats are the social security, medicare and medicaid of radio. Screw the "old people" they believe.

its a shame.

88.7 says that something big will happen Monday 9:30 AM. Are they flipping? Any one have a clue as to what is about to happen?

"These formats" died because advertisers did not want to use stations with predominantly over-55 listeners.

Advertisers have nothing against "old people" as such. They just know, after billions of dollars worth of research, that it takes more impressions to make a sale with older consumers, and the cost of the sale is often more than the profit on the sale.

Radio, seeing that there is no revenue to be had with older listeners, dumps the formats that "go geezer" as they are not profitable.

No, such was the unintended outcome of the FRC regulation of 1927. Nothing has changed much since then, as commercial stations must attract advertisers or they get sold... or close. And unless they attract enough advertisers at a good enough rate, the "shareholders" whether they be Ma and Pa, Inc. or Sarnoff and Paley, will demand change.

I'm really sick of hearing about research. Its like whatever research says is the golden word period.
This is the problem since deregulation, radio was better with indie owners. Generalized thoughts of what works and what doesn't and capitalize on cheap radio and the best advertisers has nothing to do with radio, has everything to do with big business..
I guess Im getting too old never thought i'd say that.
