SMOOTH JAZZ 105.9 WASHINGTON A BA TARGET?

They have good reason to be. WJZW tanked in the fall ratings. BA loves that! Especially when there are plenty of local jocks to blow out for its network in a market they need! And WJZW (or any struggling Smooth Jazzer with a local staff) sure needs a quick fix. They have a LARGE local staff and BA is probably salivating over that. They've already cast the first stone, Ramsey Lewis in the Morning (he might as well be EVERY Smooth Jazz morning show);

9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m Al Santos
2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Vannice Johnson
7:00 p.m. to MID Jay Lang
12MID to 5:00 a.m. Tom Grooms (BA says: "C'mon now...you're paying an overnighter? Take our Billy!)

Weekends

6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Lauren Thompson (Saturdays)

2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Charles Donovan (Saturdays)

7:00 p.m. to 12MID Kirk Tanter (Saturdays)

2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. "T.C." (Sundays)

Fernando Carlos (unspecified shift)

Boy that's a whole lotta folks and shifts BA's probably licking their chops over. Check out radio-info's ratings page for Washington and you might agree to look at this station for a body count in the near future.

BA infiltrated Baltimore, looking more at Philly and other markets. They're on the hunt, nudging poor-performing Smooth Jazz GMs; "Hey, psst! Your bottom-line! Your bonus! Better strap us on or...well, you know. Should we talk to corporate?"

They're all gone. With the state of radio as it is I thought it might happen but not with a format flip and so quickly. I thought sure BA could do a successful pitch and keep their format on. At least these jocks won't have to hear the format go on without them. Happy landings to all. I've been there and it sucks. I've totally given in to the realities of the business as it stands today. I don't know where the next phase of contemporary jazz will come from on the radio, but on HD? Still not sold on HD at all. I'm filling my iPod (never thought I'd get one) so I can program my own set of favorite contempary jazz and pretend it's an actual radio station. The dreams I had in the late 90s and early 2000s of growing in this format are all but gone. It looked good for a while. Now the bottom has fallen out. Still doing radio part-time but I wish it was with music as personable and passionate as contemporary jazz. The music is great. I like Candy Dulfer's "Candy Store" and still can't stop listening to the retro-sounding "L.A. City Lights" track. So many great releases out there. Can't get enough of Euge Groove's latest either. Kashiwa, Four80East, Chris Geith, Darren Motamedy, Kirk Whalum's "Big Ol' Shoes" from his latest. So much more! Sad, sad day. This sucks.

Sadly another one bites the dust, and in another top 20 market. Hopefully NY and DC will get new SJ stations, that are programmed a lot better than what's out there now, otherwise people will start turning to iPods, satellite radio, and a wifi type radio for the car whenever it hits the shelves.

The WASH stream seems to be a 1:1 radio of pop vocals:covers Heard Key's "No One" and Santana "Smooth" sandwiched around Brauns "Use Me". Not worth buying an HD radio for.

The sad truth is that radio programmers killed contemporary jazz on the radio. Too much non-jazz sounding vocals. Relutance to add new product. Both will lead to LESS new product and the killing off of the new releases.

Having BA place Ramsey Lewis and Dave Koz in every market, while it bothers me that local talent is being displaced, bothers me less than the killing of the format itself. Smooth Jazz kept my interest in music radio alive. Now, what's left?

jeffdfw, I finally tuned in to 107.5 The Oasis. Very impressive! Thanks for the heads up! Now if I and others could hear that in our car radio on romps to and fro. Others aren't as fortunate as I am to have satellite radio which I recently had to get because of what's happening with terrestrial radio. If the SJ station I hear on the radio were playing what I've heard on 107.5 the last couple of days I would not have paid for satellite. I think I did it because I'm just plain mad. I think my CD collection would suffice, but satellite has introduced me to new artists and music like radio used to. I make most of my purchases based on music charts and music magazine reviews.

WTUX... You are correct, sir. BA is determined to dilute a good format with so much inappropriate music that it doesn't really suprise me about the format flips. I'm willing to bet this won't be the last big-market smooth jazz defection this year... not by a long shot.

Just as long as CBS leaves WSJT/Tampa-St. Pete and KTWV/LA alone, I'm OK. I tried the Oasis, it seems to be a better mix than it used to be.

Well hopefully SJT has changed from this past summer. While in the area I actually heard Prince in the mix? SJT used to be a great station.

Nock

nope..I was down there recently and heard Prince, Spandau Ballet, and Eurythmics within an hour. Does that meant I could put the 80s station I worked for a while on my resume as smooth jazz format experience? .
