Smooth Jazz 105.9 WJZW, what's up with them??!

Hey DC area people, what's going on at WJZW? They use to be a pretty decent smooth jazz station, now they are starting to play some way out there tracksthat have nothing to do with smooth jazz. I was listening and heard them playing Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" and Timbaland/One Republic "Apologize". I can see Alicia Keys somewhat kind of fitting the format, (well not really), but at least it's on the national chart, but these two are nowhere near. Did they get a new MD and what is he or she smoking? ??? Are they trying to kill the format in this market, because looking at the ratings they aren't too far from doing that.

JoshB, you are witnessing the evolution of the Smooth Jazz format. It will barely be recognizable in time. Instrumentals are being phased out slowly and more Urban AC vocals are moving in. Pretty soon I'm sure they'll be "Smooth 105.9." Look for the format to evolve into a "Soft Urban AC". If there can be a "Soft AC" there can be a "Soft Urban AC." Around the country sales folks are already selling the format as "Smooth AC", being careful to leave out turn-off words like "Jazz" and "Urban" so it can sell better. I predict that they're getting ready to flip on the BA Network since they tanked in the ratings and have a large local staff. Like I said on the Smooth Jazz board, BA loves the opportunity to get easy clearance for their product, and a ratings-starved SJ station with a large local staff is like prime rib on the table for BA. WAY too easy to cut those salaries loose and flip on the bird. A GM's radio life depends on opportunities like that, and believe me, they'll jump at it to save their bottom line. Too easy. Too tempting. Stay tuned. This is the station to watch between now and near the start of the spring ratings period, if not sooner.

This MIGHT (and it's a big "might") be the cause of the speculation: (ABC's satellite oldies service is called "True Oldies.")

Site currently shows a graphic of Bart Simpson saying Cowabunga Dude.

Something is definitely up at the station, just five minutes ago on the left side of their website it had a picture of the afternoon host,
and it said on the air from 2PM until 7PM. Now it just says on the air 12:00AM until 12:00AM with no picture, like I said this happened
in the last five minutes.

The "Saying Goodbye is Never Easy" farewell message just went up on the front page.

I lost my stream just before 3pm, when I check the web site at 3pm they were playing
Listen to the Music by The Doobie Bros, Yes they've changed. I go to True Oldies 1059.com and get
Bart Simpson....how can I hear this?

I went to http://www.trueoldies1059.com/ and the site is there explaining what the radio station is and that they will stream soon.

Just a shot in the dark, here, but lookin' at that website, I'm thinkin' this decision was made in a hurry.

The logo looks cool, is there any jingles or imaging for 105.9 or is it the same satellite feed youll hear a la Tampa Bay and Chicago?

I am really upset! I had no idea that smooth jazz was going away AND I hate oldies stations. Where am I going to get my daily dose of smooth jazz in the metro Washington DC area now?

I just want to say "What kind of idiot, allows his company to lose over 800 million dollars?" I've owned six stations in my life and can honestly say, we've never lost a dime. This person should be the FIRST to step down from his idiot ivory tower.

I hate for anyone to lose their jobs, but as a fan of oldies radio, I'm happy to see the format start coming back to some of the major markets.

Sorry, you lost your jazz station in the process.

I was a little disturbed to see 105.9 go away. At the same time, I think Smooth Jazz belonged on a signal with better metro coverage. If SJ does return to the Washington airwaves, I hope they do more original material and keep remakes to a minimum (under 25%). I think that 100.3 or 94.7 would be ideal candidates for such a switch. Whatever happens, I hope there's no intention of putting a talk format on 107.3. FTR, it's too bad Chris Core left WMAL.

Smooth jazz is actually available in 2 places now. The WJZW HD-2 channel and the WASH HD-2 channel. If you have or can get an HD Radio, you can get your fix of the music. Unfortunately, it's probably going to be all off of a satellite or just a jukebox. That's sad because the personalities definately helped make the station.
