Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM - Milwaukee, WI

Syndicated smooth jazz programming? Possible Jones format? Only you would think that. If you ever listened to the Jones format in the past the music, while there are some rare selections being played, SUCKS! The overnight DJ is about as dry/dull as Ben Stein. Not only that but tons of commercials being played also. No, if they were smart, they would take lessons from KOAS 105.7 The Oasis in Las Vegas, NV and WNUA 95.5 in Chicago. Syndicated programming should not even be an option when it's in a major market like this! I for one, will not be happy!

Oh really? ???

Perhaps you should take the time to read these forums to see that most agree that Jones SJ has a high-quality product...

I found out that on the new station, Ramsey Lewis and Dave Koz will be on mornings and afternoons, respectively.

Kepler's all over it. It's going BA with so-called "local plans." As far as seeking work in smooth jazz, satellite definately means no local yokels. This is not a local format anymore in most markets. SJ is a "national" format. There is no one on a local level that can successfully operate this format. So when you hear of a SJ sign-on, you can bet you won't see ads seeking talent. It's now a format set up for national talent since the local stations blew it, bringing on borrowed talent from talk and AC stations in their clusters who knew nothing, and didn't have to know nothing, about the music. That brought on uninspired performances. In one small market about three years ago, a new SJ signed on and brought on an older guy blown out from a Mix station in that cluster who didn't really want the job (and they knew it). He sounded like a dishoveled, confused old man who had no idea what he was playing (the mispronounciations were numerous, my favorite being HERO-SHEEMA for Hiroshima). You couldn't hear so much as a smile and there was no attempt at humor or real personality. But since he was known in the market in another format he was chosen to anchor the station. My favorite break during the 8AM hour one day where he started out somewhat excited: "Lee Ritenour's got a new album coming out this fall that's supposed to be uh...uh...uh...(pause)...pretty GOOD!" The jocks, all except an excellent midday guy, did nothing more than announce the artists, titles and read liners. Similar scenarios in other markets helped to bring on the idea of BA Machine. SJ stations are saving up to $100,000 (assuming $30K+) a year in salary costs strapping on these networks. Set your mind on being on the outside looking in for this format until a gutsy programmer (with support from his or her superiors) comes up with better ideas for this music.

So far, I like what I hear.

My opinion is based upon a comparison to the former Smooth Jazz 93.3 WJZI.

Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM WFMR has far better variety than did the overly researched, highly repetitive playlist offered up by the former Smooth Jazz 93.3 WJZI-FM.

Once Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM WFMR gets their new antenna up, they will have completed a SJ upgrade over the former Smooth Jazz 93.3 WJZI-FM here in Milwaukee. :)

This is amazing that you don't understand this. DoubleD, take a listen to the overnight person at a Jones Smooth Jazz station. Then take a listen to Danae Alexander on WNUA 95.5. If you like that overnight guy better, then I guess the Jones format is for you. But Danae is a local DJ and sounds so much better than these satellite people. This is what I can't understand why there is no local DJs when there was on former WJZI 93.3.

My guess is because Clear Channel took down Light 97.3 a few years ago it left a big hole in the Milwaukee market for an AC station. Obviously Light 97.3 wasn't doing good but instead of trying to improve it, they just replaced it. There is WEZY 92.1 but that station is almost all voice tracked with just a live, local, morning show person. Plus that's in Racine and doesn't reach as many areas as WJZI. So I guess classical wasn't doing much better so they dumped that, and moved smooth jazz to 106.9. They could have just kept WJZI at 93.3 and switched 106.9 to AC. But I guess Milwaukee Radio Alliance wanted to try AC for some reason.

In one small market about three years ago, a new SJ signed on and brought on an older guy blown out from a Mix station in that cluster who didn't really want the job (and they knew it).

Well they should have brought on me - I could have done a much better job than him there! I certainly have the knack for it! So where is the DJ work for me there?

Understand what?

You trashed Jones Smooth Jazz, and all I did is refer you to a discussion thread that contained many positive opinions about their product.

What didn't you understand about my reply? Did you not read this discussion thread I referenced?

You seem to be focusing primarily on the DJ's on-air performance, whereas I am focusing almost exclusively on the music selection being offered by JSJ when rendering my opinion on their product.

Further, as long as the DJ's are professional, experienced and competent with the SJ format, as JSJ DJ's sound to me, than that is more than sufficient to compliment their superior musical playlist, IMHO.

Lastly, if it is Steve Michaels you are specifically trashing, IMHO I think he is more than competent, having worked for JSJ for at least 4 years that I know of, and also serving as JSJ's program director (refer to March 08, 2007 from AnotherCat)...

Observations after 1 week of BA on Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM - Milwaukee, WI.

Within the following thread, I listed a number of songs offered by Jones Smooth Jazz which really caught my attention in terms of their quality/appeal.

http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=47318.0

Here is that list...

- MONTAUK MOON - MATT MARSHAK
- NIGHT VISION - PIECES OF A DREAM
- TELL ME THE TRUTH - J. THOMPSON
- UNDERSTANDING - EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL
- SUNLIGHT - MICHAEL TOMLINSON
- SIMPLY SAID - KENNY GARRETT
- CHILLIN OUT - ERIC DARIUS
- LEAVE IT WITH ME - ALEXANDER ZONJIC
- LATE NIGHT SESSIONS - FLUFF
- AT THE MODERN - JOYCE COOLING
- JUST FEELIN IT - MICHAEL MANSON
- RUNNING - ELIANE ELIAS
- TWENTY - THE RIPPINGTONS
- NORTHERN LIGHTS - THE RIPPINGTONS
- JUST BETWEEN US - NORMAN BROWN

So far, I have not heard one of these songs on BA!! Not a one!!

Although my initial impressions of BA were good, this opinion was only rendered when compared to the former Smooth Jazz WJZI-FM.

I still feel that way...BA's variety of older SJ songs is much better than the former Smooth Jazz WJZI-FM.

However, it apapears the number and variety of NEW songs offered by BA is dreadfully lacking!! As an example, Jones SZ was playing AT THE MODERN by JOYCE COOLING way back in January of this year. Songs like TWENTY by the THE RIPPINGTONS, or Noodle Soup by Four80East, which are prominently featured by JSJ, are nowhere to be found On BA.

To me, this is what sets JSJ far above the "syndicated" pack, making BA sound rather boring and mundane in comparison, IMHO.

Classic Music WFMR-FM 106.9 is switching to Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM beginning Tuesday 6/26/07.

It will be interesting to see what type of syndicated format Smooth Jazz 106.9 FM uses...not to sound redundant, but if they were smart, they'd use Jones SJ.

Thursday (6/26) marks the one-year anniversary of the day when Classical 106.9 WFMR flipped to smooth jazz.

Sadly, BA was used by SAGA instead of Jones SJ.

After one year, I am still bored to tears, so much so that I have all but stopped listening, except for Chill With Minda Abair and Art Goodes Jazz Trax.

Well I have to tell you all as a new resident of Milwaukee that this station is somewhat disappointing with good aspects as well. I REALLY enjoy the legends of jazz show on Sunday evenings. I actually thought it might have been an every night thing until I realized that it was Sunday and a once a week show. There are times however when it sounds like they are dumping out of the music to play ID's etc. Just fading out of a song to catch the network? I don't know. I do like that they have a local personality on during the day.

I'm from Cincinnati btw. Thanks for your warm welcome.
