Smooth Jazz 1480 WCIN

Nope. It's okay music, but just not for me. They handle the automation very well though, based on what I heard when they first went on the air.

You and I are polar opposites, Major. I'd rather hear more vocals and less instrumentals. Don't hate me.

Although it's not my number one, I listen a couple times a week.

The problem for me is signal - it really degrades out here in the hinterlands. I have to listen over the 'net when I'm @ home.

BTW, I agree with major with one exception: Randy Crawford.

Well let me chime in on some stats...

Over 10,000 hours of local internet TSL, over 11,000 total, since July 1, 2007.

Pushing 200 positive emails from terrestrial listeners thanking us for returning the format to Cincinnati.

Agency Advertising inquiries up.

Bus Backs, and Cable Marketing campaigns are effectively spreading the word based upon response we get on the street.

12+ rating saw no marked movement in the midst of a format flip...either we lost no one, (doubtful) or we gained as many new listeners as we lost immediately (likely). While I don't put a lot of faith in the book for any station, it is what we live and die by. Curious to see upcoming trends. As we move forward with events and promotions, I believe that we will see even more solid production.

I think a lot of people are listening. In fact, many more, and more diverse than before... and not based on the fact that I work for the station.

I guess it's my time to come out of the closet.....I do like Randy Crawford AND Swing Out Sister.

Thanks for the posts in this thread. I started thinking no one was listening.

Darksoldier, is your engineer close to finishing the antenna problems? I routinely get the Cleveland 1480 station during critical hours. In fact, I was taking my mom to Good Sam Hospital this morning around 7:00-7:30 AM, and I heard the Cleveland station as close as crossing the Ohio River on I-471.

Needless to say, that isn't good.

Well my friend, Northern KY is a bone of contention. That dead spot appears in the valley and disappears at the top of the cut in the hill 71/75 and at St Luke 471. If the FCC decides to allow AM's to implement the use translators as is being debated...it will be a quick fix, until then I believe it will be a challenge.

I can hear 1480 WCIN here in Danville, KY as it fights it out with another 1480 here in the state. 1490 WFKY Frankfort is hard on it as well but I still can pick it out through the interference. As a side note, I cannot hear WIZF due to 101.1 from Hazard and I cannot hear 100.3 WMOJ due to 100.3 from Knoxvlle, TN. UGHHHH!!

Well, no one has congratulated darksoldier, et.al., for the 0.8 in the ratings, so I guess I will.

Congratulations, guys.

Look how close you are to 50,000 watt WCKY with its mammoth resources ( a paltry 1.0). I would be embarassed if I owned WCKY. WDJO beats them.

I love smooth jazz but on am? Anyone that is into smooth jazz is listening on their iPod to their own collection. Who needs the banter and the playlists that needed updating 10 years ago.

Not according to the trend my friend... In fact, seems that more are listening to SJ on AM than Talk on FM. Give it a shot, you might find that it is more "tolerable" than you think.

PS Thanks for the congrats Major! Lets see if we can break a point in the book.

Has WCIN improved their signal in the past year? I heard it 10 miles east of Madison,IN and 40 miles west of Madison,IN over the past few weeks. It seems that it used to be non-existent in those regions.

Jim Gray has done an excellent job cleaning up the signal. For quite a while the signal was limited to 250 watts. My brother and I thought they may as well have set a boom box in a second story building and had a better audience.

Earlier this year, they were finally allowed to have 4500 watts daytime, 300 watts nighttime. This made a remarkable improvement. Then, the ground wires were stolen from one tower (at least), causing a marked degradation. This has been fixed. An optimod is also being used, making the signal "brighter". They are not using the IBOC tunnel sound, either.

I think they have done a remarkable job, and I blame darksoldier for that.

BTW darksoldier, did I leave anything out? I'm very proud of what you've done.

Kudos to Jim...I remember his name from my days in the Cincy engineering community 30 years ago. Just looked at the day pattern on radio-locator.com. Nice...more than I expected from those short sticks. I grew up on AM and will always cheer for the mom & pop that plays music on AM...best wishes from Indiana...

Thanks again Tom. Just that the chief engineer on this project is Jim Stitt. On his team are both Jim Gray and Russ Hines. Kudos to them for the excellent job they have done with the signal. At the end of the day, it wouldn't matter what programming decisions I and the rest of the management team make if it can't be heard. In the midst of a miserably dry and hot summer, they managed to get a very acceptable signal this high on the AM band. The good news is with cooler wetter weather the signal will actually improve. Of course, we are also very proud of the over 20k hours of TSL on the net since launch of the stream. Still a long way to go with this one, but we are very excited about the possibilities. As with all radio stations, the focus is now on increasing revenue, and market awareness.
