Smooth Jazz 92.7 Flipping Formats

From their Facebook:

The decision to end Smooth Jazz 92.7 was not an easy one to make. Many factors contributed to the change, including the fact that listenership never reached predicted levels and revenues coming in were not enough to support the station and keep it on the air. We thank you for being a loyal listener and for your support of the station. A new format will begin shortly.

Sorry to hear this for Paul Scott and Carol Seidel. Paul did a fine job at keeping a rapidly-fading format going and Carol sounded great. Unfortunately the audience never grew beyond a certain point, nor did the revenue I would guess.

So now they're stunting with every version of "Stairway to Heaven" ever recorded. Does this mean a return to the "Stairview" moniker, and perhaps a comeback for Classic Rock?

Nah, that would be too easy. What else could "heaven" apply to. Let's see. Maybe contemporary Christian? We are talking Lancaster County here, where WDAC is in the top 4 and non-com WJTL enjoys a considerable listenership. Just speculating.

I thought perhaps they might keep some sort of smooth jazz format on the 101.3 HD2 channel. Right now, it's still simulcasting 92.7. It would certainly seem a waste to continue to use the subchannel to simulcast 92.7 while there seems to be some audience out there for the smooth jazz format. Maybe Hall doesn't think there are enough HD radios out there to make original programming on HD worthwhile.

My wife and I often listened to Smooth Jazz 92.7 and we put it on for our less-than-one year old daughter to get her to sleep every night. She'd stir and start crying if we'd turn it off when we came to bed - so we kept it on all night long for her. Maybe we'll have to try Temple's "real jazz" now!

To see the future of 92.7, you must look to the past.
"STARVIEW 92"...THE boomers still remember it and would listen to it again if it's programed right....and not from some bird all the time. let's just hope they don't go back to the "Music of your Life". Gag !!!!!

By the way, I just noticed that the format that used to show "Jazz" on 92.7's RDS is now reads "Country".

Country? Yeah...we need another one of those don't we? How about a Lite AC or perhaps a real Classic Rock. Those would make more sense but Country? (shakes head in disbelief)

What often happens with 6kw CLASS A frequencies is that they flip to a format that helps out their "big sister" station....in this case THE ROSE. What formats do they compete with? Country, CHR, Classic Hits/Oldies....all these come to mind. Some kind of Country format would be easy for then to do...since most of the ROSE staff were part of the old Z-107/Cat Country. There is a hole in the market for an Adult Contemporary Christian format. It could position itself between WJTL and WDAC...."Heaven 92-7".....just a thought. Classic Country would be another option....."Country Legends 92.7"......I guess we'll find out soon!

Hall Communications filed a request for the WKZF calls a few weeks ago. Logic would say they did it to replace WSJW on 92.7, but I suppose it could be for one of their other stations.

I happend to be at Hersey Park and recorded side 1 of a 120-minute cassette of this station.
I like the format, (didn't when I was younger), having no idea it would be the last day of the format.
You just never know in radio. Airchecks are a way to relive radio, and for me times in my life, my trips, or defunct formats I liked as a kid that are either dieing, or dead.
Sure, I love CHR/Hot AC, but other stuff is nice too.
Satelite radio and internet radio are the future I do believe, and the place for formats that no longer exist on the Am/FM band.
Formats such as Smooze Jazz, Soft AC, Rhythmic Oldies, 50's-70's Oldies, Beautiful Music/Easy Listening, and 80's Rock.
The downside? It isn't localy run with a local airstaff and involvement in the comunity.
The Upside, delving deeper into whatever format you're listening too.
John

Who was the feamale Jock doing mid morning? I recorded at 10:42 AM.

Several smooth jazz formatted stations have dropped the format around the country in the last few weeks per postings on some of the blogs.

That's Michelle Chase. Unless things have changed for her recently, she was voicetracking the show from her home in suburban Kansas City. She used to be on a ton of smooth jazz stations. David Washington, the night guy on WSJW, was also voicetracked from his home. I think he lived in Kansas City, too, but I'm not 100% certain.

I loved Starview 92, I also liked 92 Rock and when it went back to Starview. However, please Hall Communications, we don't need more country or classic rock or another Rose. Do something different this time, give us a true rock Alternative station like Radio 104.5 out of Philadelphia.

The peak calls themselves classic hits, and the music is all over the place. 92.7 is calling themselves classic rock and the music appears to reflect that.

The music sounds good, but how many stations in the area do we need with Fleetwood Mac, Bob Seger, Springsteen, the Eagles, the Steve Miller Band, Foreigner, the Doobie Brothers, etc., etc., as their core music library? I now count 5 such stations. WMHX, 106.7 abandoned such a format because it didn't do much (with 50,000 watts)! WTPA, The River , WSOX and The Peak own the market for Classic Rock/Classic Hits. This will be another 1-share format.

At least if you were going to put Rock back on 92.7, which has a colorful history as the area's original AOR station, AT LEAST take advantage of that history and call it....STARVIEW! (duh)

And while you're at it, why not bring back a couple of personalities from Starview's heyday and really make a splash? Instead we have still another automated station with no personality, and since the music is all available elsewhere, no compelling reason to listen. (yawn)

Do the WKZF calls have any meaning in Central PA? I'm not from the area so I'm not sure. I really can't figure out what they mean. They do roll off the tongue though, "92.7 'KZF"
