Smooth Jazz Chicago Pulls The Plug

Chicago has had a smooth jazz station for almost three decades. WNUA followed by 87.7 and finally Smooth Jazz Chicago on line. Today, Rick O'Dell made it official that come January 1, 2016 the station will cease operation. So very sad to hear this news. How lucky we were to have had these many years of Smooth Jazz.

There's going to be a lot more of that come next month, as the reality of the increased copyright royalty rights starts to hit home.

I wonder how many niche-formatted online "stations" will remain standing by this time next year ...

The music industry is on record as being opposed to free ad-supported streaming radio. They prefer subscription-based stations. Those stations that find a way to get credit card numbers from their listeners may be able to survive. Those who base their business model strictly as a free service will have a decision to make. As will their listeners.

I am hearing that 360 will also shut down.

Robert Bass has been keeping an eye on Live365 (which what I think you meant) and posted yesterday in the main thread on this subject:

As of today, Live365 is still in business. They have said all the personal broadcasting plans as well as the X5000 plan will expire at 11:59 PM on December 31st. Personal stations and all current X5000 stations will be changed to VIP only on January 1st. Only the Pro plans will remain unchanged and the layoffs rumor is unsubstantiated at this time.
