Smooth Jazz in Boston?

In general, I don't think HD radio will become popular until HD equipment becomes standard in every new vehicle. I know I'm not planning to purchase an HD radio anytime soon.

The problem with this deal is that you have to specify that you want it and pay between $250 and $500 extra for it on a new car. For existing cars, yes you can take your Ford to the dealership and they'll happily install one for you. Again, you'll need to pay for it.

How many people do you know who will do this? Probably very few. Yes, it is encouraging that the radios will exist - but they are not being marketed well (sound familiar?).

HD won't take off until it is standard equipment across a good percentage of the new cars/trucks sold in the US. I do not see this happening anytime soon. Most automakers have thrown their lot in with one of the 2 satellite providers. This technology could take another 10 years to take off - if it does at all.

Well, it is a step forward towards making it known and available...

(and yes, like all things in life you have to pay for it...just like we did/do for FM's...however, the price I hear is more like (200-300.)

Second, people who have specific formats they enjoy will gladly do it. (i.e..a Jazz listeners....I think a smooth jazz fan will GLADLY pay $200 to have unlimited uninterrupted Jazz....with no subscription fees. Also, some dealers may "throw it in" as a bonus during negotiating.

I don't think you will have to "specify".....as some cars that come "loaded" will automatically have it in there.....with the 6-CD changer, etc.

Plus HD radio doesn't have to "take off" as you mentioned...it is and will always be an ancillary service...something nice to have.

Lastly, you remind me of the people that poo-poo-ed FM years ago. (But you're too young to remember that, right?) There were people who would save the $55 it took to get an FM in the car...thinking why would I ever need an FM?

There are jocks who would "never work for an FM station".

Thats all changed now, right? Its the same way we talk about the AM dial. ;-)

It will take time...for the public to know about it...but remember the people that are pushing HD radio are the people that own all the radio stations. So they can promote it as much as they want.

I'm sure there will be a time in the future than many cars will come with an HD radio stock. And like for FM...thats when things changed.
