Smooth Jazz in DFW

When are we going to get this format back...the market hasn't been the same without it.

With markets like New York dumping it for the same reasons CBS stated that they dumped The Oasis here, I don't see it happening.

The Oasis is on 107.5 HD-2. Smooth Jazz is on Sunday mornings on rim shot KOOI that can be heard over part of the area. Jazz is on 88.1 and rim shot 88.9.

Speaking of which... 107.5 - 2 the Oasis has been silent since yesterday. What's going on? ???

KLUV HD-2 went silent a week ago, I wonder how many people noticed? They are back - I suspect equipment changeouts at CBS ---

I'm still sick that The Oasis is off the air, when there is so much "common-crap" on the airwaves in the DFW market.
I wonder how much longer Houston will be able to keep it? I would have thought that the overall DFW market is much
larger than the Houston market???

Still think they should have stuck more with the 106.1 format instead of the 107.5 format. Lots of cool jazz songs I was
turned onto when The Oasis was at 106.1

What do you think is the common crap? And have you looked at revenue figures for the market?

Everybody usally complains about too much talk and too much sports. But most people seem to forget that WBAP and KTCK are the top 2 billing stations in the market.

Too much old rock music? The 25-54 demo, and especially the 35-45 and 45-54 cells, are highly desired by advertisers.

Too much spanish? Hispanics make up something close to 40% of the market; Odds are that you may think it's all the same crap, I wouldn't be suprised if they think the same for all the "gringo" music on "our" stations... "it all sounds the same"..

The Oasis's problem is that they drew a mostly black audience, mostly 45 and over. Not the most desired audience for advetisers, not an easy "sell". And with radio revenues down markedly over years past, CBS probably didn't want to ride that horse into teh ground, and got out when they could...

And it's been said here before. Movin is probably making more money with lower ratings because much more of their audience (like 100%) are in that 25-54 demographic.

BTW - KHJZ is not possible, at least not in Plano. Too much interference from KKAJ Ardmore. It even blocks KBGO Waco - although Waco can punch through KKAJ on occasion.

For me persoanlly, Nothing.
But re-read that and notice please where I said it's not the most desired audienece for advertisers and not an easy sell.

Here's a sample of what I'm talking about...
http://www.targetmarketnews.com/storyid12190701.htm

Even though they're moving away from the 'no urban' dictates, it's still there somewhat, and still a fact of radio life. The older urban audience isn't as "desired" as an older white audience might be. Which is probably why KAAM is still on the air, and the Oasis isn't.

Well this "white-boy" was a loyal listener of The Oasis and I think there were a lot of other non-blacks that enjoyed their programming
as well.

Jay... you know that I too was a loyal listener of the Oasis and very upset to see it go. However, I tuned in to the Wave in Houston this week online and what I heard was not so smooth jazz. Sure there was a mixture of Dave Koz, Kenny G, Mini Abair etc... BUT, I also heard Santana w/ Michelle Branch, Janet Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Earth, Wind & Fire. While these are some fine artists... they are not smooth jazz. IMO, The Oasis on 107.5-2 (HD) is what smooth jazz is all about. 100% smooth jazz with no commercials. That is the main reason I have given up my rants to try to get SJ back on FM.

Thats what killed the format. I have been saying that for the past 10 years. If you call yourself SMOOTH JAZZ, then program smooth jazz music. Janet Jackson and Marvin Gaye are not smooth jazz. Anita Baker is, but not freakin Janet Jackson.

So using your logic, KHVN, KGGR, KSOC or KKDA should not be on the air either. Why are 40+ black folks not wanted by advertisers? They have money. They need to know about goods and services. If I had a product that I wanted to market to older black folk, why would I spend money on KVIL, WBAP or KZPS. Im going to stations that appeal to black folks. That's common sense.

I know that the NUD's are out there and I support the theory. Why would Carl Sewel advertise on K104? Is that the type of clientel he wants at his dealership. Probably not, but if a man goes into the dealership with his britches hanging off his butt, and he has the money to buy a Coupe De Ville then I'm sure Carl is not turning down that money.

Okay, maybe I phrased that poorly. It's not that they are not wanted, they're not as wanted as a more mass appeal station's audience might be. I think part of it has to do with the total % of blacks in DFW- they're only around 10% of the total market- so if you're trying to advertise a product to A LOT of "older folk", not just black, why go to a station whose main appeal is in a limited demo?

Even if The Oasis got 50% of the older black audience, that's only 5% of the market Let's say KRLD gets 20% of just the older white audience, that's 10% of the target market, right? Then it gets into costs per point, reach, etc,

Salem and Jeff, I agree with your points, whole-heartedly. The Wave in Houston is programming the exact same stuff The Oasis was here in Dallas. The Oasis
was it's BEST when it was on at 106.1 and truly played smooth jazz music.

All of the artists you mention, to me, are not smooth jazz, either. And as much as I love Genesis, their songs and songs from Phil Collins shouldn't be on
a smooth jazz format either. I will say this though, 106.1 played a very cool song by Level 42 called Sleepwalkers and I would have never heard that song
if not for 106.1 and it is a very cool song that fits in with the format. Horizont was also a cool artist that I found out about due to 106.1 when The Oasis
was on that frequency instead.

It would take a VERY good programmer to get the original Oasis back to the standard it once was, but I doubt it will happen. I'll have to give the HD
version on the 'Net a try and see what it is like.

guys, sorry. In all honesty, I was joking when I started the post. You will NEVER see SJ here in Dallas again and the reason why? PPM. decent cume but no tsl...it will flop from the start, combined with the urban comp, advertisers won't buy, just like they didn't the last time.

I may not know what I am talking about but it would seem to me that TSL would be high with the SJ format. Seems like it is an "at work" format and also background music at gatherings etc...

Speaking of "at work," notice how many offices once played The Oasis during the day, and those same ones are now playing KVIL during the day?* Remember the long-standing corporate policy (and not just at CBS) that stations within the same cluster shall not compete with each other?

I still relish the time that KOAI beat KVIL AND KLUV in 12+ in 2003. Yeah, I know, 12+, but still, being the red-headed stepchild of the cluster, beating the "legacy" stations had to hurt.

*Yes, I can say this with some certainty...after being a courier for nearly 10 years in the 1990s and being in and out of nearly every office in North Texas!
