Smooth Jazz is Back in Chicago!

"that cutting-edge community-responsive approach to Smooth Jazz in Chicago."

Great spin for 100% canned BA.

OMG! :'D *tears of happiness*
:D ;D
:) :) :) :) :) :) :)

I had just asked someone who posted on Mr. O'Dell's Wall about which 87.7 she was referring to that played smooth jazz and came back from the store. She replied: "Chicago"! So I went on her word and now I am a HAPPY CAMPER. I mean I expected (and/or hoped) for a miraculous renaissance, but this was REAL FAST.
Of course then I had my eye on 87.7, too. Something told me they would switch...a hunch I may have thought was wishful thinking, but so turns out it wasn't.

My sentiments exactly...this is like kicking a bum in an alley...presenting Keplers BA syndicated rubbish as "cutting-edge" is an insult to collective intelligence of true fans of the genre.

Not to mention that a good percentage of digital-tuned FM receivers can't tune below 87.9. Or that on the ones that can, it sounds like off-frequency trash. Or that once LPTV is forced to go digital, it'll be off the air. Or that the FCC could close this loophole at any time. Yeah, and it's cookie-cutter "jazz".

A sad day...

Genuine "smooth jazz"' is really quite nice for low background music during dinner, but it has to be nice jazz.

Thanks all for the feedback....this is day one of 87.7 Smooth Jazz.....tell me what YOU would to like to see and hear in a well programed Chicago Smooth Jazz station. Don't just knock the SJ Network....give me actionable and specific suggestions. We will listen....

Well if you are going to be programming some music locally, I'd lay off the 20-30 year old R&B songs and play more instrumentals or acoustic tracks. I'd go heavy on The Rippingtons, Paul Hardcastle, Pat Metheny Group, Hiroshima, etc. Play more than 2 or 3 hits by those artists. Then I'd play some deeper tracks from Sade (Siempre Hay Esperanza is a good cut), Everything But The Girl (Understanding and Driving), and Boz Scaggs (Miss Riddle is a great track)--stuff the network never touches. If you want to be hip, I'd mix in some new chill stuff from Four80East, Soul Ballet, and the like. I'd avoid the John Mayer, Beyonce, and Maroon 5.

I always love the guitar driven tracks from Larry Carlton. Some of the deeper 80s and early 90s cuts from Tom Scott would fit in well. Stuff that reminds you of a late 80s crime movie.

Give it a try for yourself without the older stuff and see how it works out and how long you can go with it. Let us know how that works for you.

The late Wayman Tisdale, Norman Brown, some Incognito and some Roy Ayers, some cool sounds like that.

If you've got a stream I'll tune in, all the way from Alabackwards.

It's great! I love the selection of songs! I also like the decision to play the jingle in between commercials and sets. The old WNUA jingle that is. :)

Ooh, yeah. Gotta love Rippingtons, Hardcastle, Pat Metheny (doesn't he do the song 'Girl Next Door'?), Hiroshima's One Wish is cool, etc. Tower of Power?? OOH, how about Quintana and Speer's "The Way I Feel" from their old album Shades and Shadows. A fellow member here let me know who wrote that song. I just got reacquainted! I LOVE THAT SONG.

And maybe some John Tesh and Yanni. Sprinkle some of that if you can. :D

Hey Pat...who do you report to??

Is it Kepler??

If so, I'm not buying your "we will listen" schtick!!

DD...

Thanks for your feedback...guess the proof will be in the pudding. My goal is to build a great SJ station custom made for Chicago. So far the fact that we are keeping this format alive has been very positive. Now...we have work to do...and yes I welcome and greatly encourage input from Chicago.
