smooth jazz on shortwave band?

All the local broadcast smooth jazz (except for HD radio) has disappeared. The powers that be at work have now made it verboten to stream ANYTHING online. I have Sirius/XM in the car, but that still leaves me with limited choices at my 8-5 desk. :-\

So here's the question. Is there ANY smooth jazz on shortwave... anywhere? ???

This is an interesting question. I know spiritof67 (who posts on this board) is a huge shortwave radio guy, so he may be able to help you out. There are also services like Audionow that enable you to listen over a land line or cell phone. Another option is to record your favorite stream overnight on your mobile device (connected to your desktop) while your head is on the pillow. There are apps that enable you to do this, and believe it or not, the app even captures the metadata (track info). So it is as if you are streaming live. Very cool. One of my regular listeners (and radio-info friend ;)) does this so he can listen during his drive to and from work without the need for a mobile data plan.

Unless you work in a log cabin, I don't think you'd hear much of anything on a shortwave radio in an office building.

I recall hearing a lot of music on shortwave back in the 60's and 70's. Some of the Western and Eastern Europe broadcasters would have a Top 10 or Top 5 countdown of some sort. Lots of music on the Latin American stations, too. But even in the best reception conditions, shortwave was a lo-fi medium. Hard to imagine a smooth jazz program getting any traction in all that crackling and fading.

As you probably know, major broadcasters have either eliminated or cut way back on shortwave, since that li'i old thing called the Internet came along. BBC World Service and Deutsche Welle roared in like locals in their shortwave heyday, but they're mostly online or (in the BBC's case) relayed by public radio now.

Yes, completely understandable. Oh, well-- just thought I'd throw it out there :-\

Good point about the assumed reception variables.

RBW, shortwave broadcasting has sadly been on the wane for the past 15 years. That said, the internet has more than made up for that.

For years, I worked in an office that discouraged streams, and I recorded internet streams overnight and took them to work. Many of those streams are the airchecks I have posted from JRN. There are a number of devices that will record streams (like audacity) for any mp3 player (or even CD player) you might have.

Between Chris' The .Wav service and the airchecks I have posted over the years, you should easily be able to work-around your workplace "no streaming" rules.

Is it about "their bandwidth" or "their time"?
If it's only about their bandwidth, you could always get a wireless access card and cheapo laptop.

If it's about their time, then they don't want you have any distractions at all.
Or is "radio" OK?

I think it's bandwidth - Or moreso stupid things that others have done to ruin it for everyone. Yes radio is ok, which is what I have now. I don't own an iPod/iPad and don't need any further charges added to my cellphone bill :-\ I pig-out on Sirius/XM when I get in the car :D

I'm a long time shortwave listener and smooth jazz listener and recently discovered that a station in Bangkok that Radio Thailand uses to simulcast on SW has a smooth jazz pgm on Saturday and Sunday nights (Bangkok time). They are called the Wave (88.1 FM) and normally plays adult comtemporary music with English DJ's. The program is on 9am to 1pm EDT Saturday and Sunday. It is pretty watered down with songs like Gerorge Benson (Turn your love around) but I did hear new songs from Brian Culbertson and Jeff Lorber. It is a commerical station so you hear some local advertisements (some in Thai). Their internet stream is adequate (about 32k). Their site is http://nbt.prd.go.th/ and select the 88.1 station.
