Smooth Jazz Quickly Returns to Milwaukee Radio

To be fair, and in light of all the bad news lately, I have to extend kudos to the local Saga SJ BA affiliate her in Milwaukee...station management made the "daring" move to recently add some new programming...considering the very conservative market in these parts, I was really surprised to see that they added a "chill" show to their lineup.

Here is a copy of the email I sent in support of their decision...didn't want to get too critical of BA, as I have a feeling that local management understands that the network is not helping the SJ format (from feedback I've received on other forum), and they are trying to do small things to make SJ a success here (they seem to be having difficulty getting "traction" in the ratings - Milwaukee Ratings ) and to provide a much-needed departure from BA...

I recently returned from Destin FL (I was there from 1/24/07 - 2/29/07), where I ironically first heard the Chill with Mindi Abair show on WSBZ 106.3 FM - The Sea Breeze, Fort Walton Beach, FL.

WSBZ 106.3 FM - The Sea Breeze, Fort Walton Beach, FL - Weekly Schedule

I thought it was I fantastic show, and was elated to now see it on your Saturday schedule. I was also happy to hear that you picked up JAZZ TRAX with Art Good, which I listened to on your station as I finished up my Sunday morning drive back. I think it is one of the finest weekly syndicated SJ shows out there, and I was a regular listener to the show when it was on WJZI-FM/B93.3.

WSBZ 106.3 FM - The Sea Breeze, Fort Walton Beach, FL also featured another fine Saturday night show after Chill with Mindi Abair. The Groove Boutique with Rafe Gomez was a great compliment to Mindi's show, and was a perfect mood-fit for Saturday nights!! You may want to give it serious consideration for your station.

Thanks for adding Mindi and Art, and keep up the good work (keep improving)!!

Cool, Double D. Good to give some props to a Smooth Jazz outlet. Don't get too excited though. They're struggling in the ratings if you take a look at the radio-info ratings page for Milwaukee-Racine they are next to last of all stations ranked above a 1.0. They've been able to afford it because the only local hosts they have are the great Patti Genko (love her show!) mid-day and the excellent Kareeda Chones on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Everyone else is a BA host. If the only thing they can add to the mix is new syndicated fare on the weekend it may not help once Saga gets impatient. I believe the ratings for this station are worse than its predecessor. The ones programming the station don't know and don't have to know this music. It's all BA. So creativity with the music can't come from the station itself. They have to buy it. And with no ratings they may not be able to afford it much longer. I see a flip coming in short order unfortunately.

I hear you and understand/agree with everything you say...their lackluster ratings concern me, although not unexpected given the troubles within the format itself and the damage BA is doing.

They do depart from BA during Patti & Kareeda's shows...during these times, particularly on Saturday afternoons, they will mix in some new/unfamiliar songs that are not "BA-stamped".

Who makes the programming decisions during these local time slots/shows?

Going to be on the worlds most beautiful beaches this week! Hate that Jones is gone. Always liked being able to flip between the 2 stations. Jones had much much more energy than SBZ.

BTW if you tune in this week, it will be a best of show? Probably couple weeks ago repeated.

BA-tainted SJ affiliates are suffering casualties across the country, and their WI clone appeared to be on life support here in Milwaukee (poor ratings).

Wi'08 P2 showed a nice bump though...the 2.1 was the highest since SAGA flipped from cassical to SJ last June. Maybe this will give station mnagement some breathing room to expand their local programming, so as to give their listeners a much needed break from the monotony of Kepler's cookie-cutter BA programming.

That's another station like WRQQ in Nashville, that seems to be always flipping format. They should let me program those BA affiliates - I KNOW I could do a much better job than they are currently doing!

Thursday (6/26) marks the one-year anniversary of the day when Classical 106.9 WFMR flipped to smooth jazz.

Sadly, BA was used by SAGA instead of Jones SJ.

After one year, I am still bored to tears, so much so that I have all but stopped listening, except for Chill With Minda Abair and Art Goodes Jazz Trax.

Apparently, other SJ listeners are also bored to tears by BA's programming, as Spring P2 ratings (which, coincidentally, were just released today) were abysmal...

BA is using their heritage station clients as flagships and saying that they can give others that kind of success but actually they don't do well as a startup. People listen to The WAVE and WNUA because they always have, it's habit, and the stations can phase out Smooth Jazz but nobody else in the market is that interesting either so listeners stick with them. Starting up is different...you have to give listeners a reason to come to you. They don't seem to be doing that.

Ratings hot off the press...1.1 (and falling like a rock) for Kepler's BA clone here in The Brew City ...I wonder if 106.9 even makes it to their 2nd anniversary in June??
